Norma Jeane Mortenson's Icon: Marilyn Monroe
Norma Jeane Mortenson, also known as Marilyn Monroe, was and still is an icon because of her bravery and high self-esteem. She is so famous because she didn’t cover up her body, she embraced her curves and never hid them like most girls did back in the day “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” Many women from her era weren’t as sexualized as she was and that made her more entertaining also. In 1962 Marilyn Monroe died at age 36. No one knows how she died, but 50 years later she is still an icon. Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926, Her mother was admitted into a mental hospital when she was young, so she was in foster homes most of her childhood, until she moved in with a family friend. When she was 16 she got married she got married to 21 year old Jimmy Dougherty. She worked on an assembly line in a factory when Jimmy left for war. She was noticed by a photographer as she was working in the factor and shortly after was offered any modeling opportunities. She then divorced her husband and signed a contract with Twentieth Century Fox. She …show more content…
Some say she is only remembered by her sex appeal and drug habits but it is so much more than that to me. I personally look past the sex and drugs and look at how she is so comfortable in her own skin and that just because she has some curves that it doesn’t make her “ugly” or “fat” it just makes her a little more meaty than most models are. She doesn’t cover herself up more because she is bigger she embraces it in a way to show other women that it is okay to be more the 100 pounds and that you can still be beautiful even if you’re “overweight.” And she never let the people who didn’t agree with her decisions and opinions change her and I think that is a big problem in our world

The successful stars have been those whose appeal can be catalogued into a series of such traits, associations and mannerisms” (Gledhill: 1991: 40). This statement can easily be applied to Marilyn Monroe because she was loved for her glamour and beauty as well as the “girl next door” persona. Even now after her death, she is still just as, maybe even more, successful in the present.…
