Norfolk Crime Rate
Crime in Norfolk

Crime in Norfolk I chose to analyze the crime rate in Norfolk, Virginia. I’ll be moving there if my fiancé is re-stationed to the Naval base there. I was curious about how safe it is to live there, but it’s not at all. The crime rate is greater than I could have imagined and that makes me uncertain about having to live there. I believe more should be done about it, and below is what I think would make it better. In the city of Norfolk there is a 1 in 169 chance of becoming the victim of a crime. That’s compared to the 1 in 508 chance in the whole state of Virginia. There are 145 per square miles in Norfolk. From June 15, 2013 through June 30, 2013 there was an average of 60 crimes committed per day. The safest neighborhood is the Hampton Boulevard area and one of the worst is the Brambleton, Norfolk State University area. I’m truly surprised at the amount of crime in the city. I was always under the impression Norfolk was much safer due to the prominent military population. The crime rate in Norfolk is much higher than all of Virginia. The amount of murders committed were stunning, and unexpected. I feel Norfolk is in need of more officers patrolling to aid in crime deterrence. For the crime that does happen, they would need a few investigators to help solve them. I would hire two crime scene investigators to collect evidence from crime scenes. I would also make sure at least one of them could run the lab. Then I’d hire one office administrator to file the reports. Also, I’d hire four police officers to patrol crime ridden areas to help prevent criminals, and one investigator. The investigator would have an important role in catching suspects and would need to specialize in homicide also. Overall, the crime rate in Norfolk is higher than 94% of the United States. That is much higher than I expected before researching this topic. The decisions I’d make for the city is preventive, I wouldn’t wait for

    Newark Nj Crime

There are a lot of social problems in my community. The most current social issue is that Newark, NJ has laid off 167 police officials on November 30th of 2010. This was 14% of the police working for Newark. They were discharged from several precincts within Newark. Jen Chung from Gothamist stated "crime has increased there have been numerous carjacking’s—victims include a staffer in the NJ Attorney General's office and a Newark school principal—and shootings (since Thursday, four people have been shot dead and six have been wounded)." Since the layoff of police, residents have feared whether or not they will be safe in this high crime city they reside in. According to David Giambusso and Alexi Friedman from the Star Ledger (”Newark finalizes 167 police layoffs after union refuses Booker's plea to return to negotiating table”), “The layoffs are projected to save $9.5 million in annual expense, part of the Booker administration’s effort to close a $83 million hole in the 2011 city budget.” This social problem can be dealt with by bringing in state troopers to replace the laid off officers, assigning more officers to be on patrol instead of doing desk work, and by starting neighborhood watch programs.…

The biggest problem with solving crime is police doesn’t respond to break in unless somebody is hurt or dead. Due to the high crime death rate due to gun violence police is to respond only to that. You Can call 911 all you want , but there will not be any respond by the law coming were you are.(Charles Richardson's) informative column on (Macon and Bibb County crime statistics) points out that while aggravated assaults have declined in the city and county, residential burglaries are up 6% over last year. These burglaries are associated with drugs and violence. The reality is that police cannot be everywhere all the time to protect our homes. Roadblocks and visible police presence may deter crime briefly, but unless we turn society into a police state even those measures will not suffice. Citizens must take some responsibility for their own safety. The truth is the police, despite their motto “to protect and serve,” cannot be everywhere. Let's remember that courts have ruled the police do not have a legal obligation to protect individuals; the police owe a duty to protect the community at large (Bowers v. DeVito; 1982) but not individual persons, homes, or businesses. www.haciendapub.com…

Nevertheless, some readers may challenge my view by insisting that the crime rate of Englewood community is worse than ever before along with a gradual increase of exotic population. However, a study has shown that personal safety is better than ever in the Englewood community instead of constantly increasing crime rate (Matt). The NBC Chicago News report that the crime rate quickly drops as young hipsters and Millennials with the higher income move into the gentrified Englewood community. Not only does the NBC disprove some reader’s claim, it strengthens my argument that it’s safer and more secure than previously Englewood community. While many may say gentrification cause higher crime rate, the perspective speaks for itself; the crime…

I live in Seymour, Tennessee, which is just South of Knoxville, the third largest city in the state. When I first moved there in 1972, Seymour was considered very rural, but now is littered with subdivisions and many businesses. There are still several large agriculture areas spread around the residential areas. People first moved to Seymour to avoid the high crime rates and violent crimes of the cities. In the 1970’s crimes were almost nonexistent and included acts such as thefts, holiday vandalisms, and the occasional home burglaries. It was considered a very safe place to live and perfect to raise a family.…

Improved policing techniques can help combat the rise in crime if the police were more involved in the communities and held community meeting on a monthly basis to talk about the crime issues that are going on in the neighborhood and discussed some solutions. They could also try to do something to make police seem less like the “bad guy” to some people and maybe do some type of public speaking in schools and prisons and get the people that are committing the crimes to realize that they can do their part in making their own community a better and safer place to live for any children they may have now and in the future.…
