Nora Helmer and Women in American Literature
Women were valued very little by nineteenth century society. The treatment of these women was also extremely negative; they were expected to stay home and fulfill domestic duties. Literature of this time embodies and mirrors social issues of women in society. Henrik Ibsen uses Nora Helmer in A Doll House to portray the negative treatment of all women throughout society during the nineteenth century. Many women characters throughout American literature reflect the same conflicts and attitudes of Nora in Ibsen 's play A Doll House.

<br>The role of a woman was inferior to that of a man, especially in marriages. The main duties of a woman were centered around the home. They were expected to fulfill their domestic duties, such as caring for the children, cooking washing, and cleaning the household. She had the responsibilities of dealing with a household and she almost always had children to care for, which required strength and knowledge; however, being able too fulfill marital duties and satisfying her husband brought satisfaction to some married women.

<br>In the play A Doll House, Nora too finds happiness in keeping her husband pleased. She always 'play-acts ' for Torvald, and she enjoys doing so. Nora has the responsibility of dealing with household issues. She basically oversees Anne-Marie, who is the children 's nurse, in caring for the three small children; she is also responsible for doing household shopping as suggested in these lines:

<br>...come here so I can show you everything I bought...new clothes for Ivar here--and a sword. here a horse and a trumpet for Bob...And here I have dress material and handkerchiefs for the maids. Old Anne Marie really deserves something more. (Ibsen 784)

<br>This proves that Nora does have responsibilities in her home, and she is capable of effectively caring for the members of her family.

    Nora and Torvald are a married couple and been taking on many challenges in their relationship.Torvald basically takes care of and provides for Nova and their children.     Nora is in an interesting relationship with her husband Torvald. When readers first get an image of how their relationship is, it would not seem that bad. Once further into the play you see that it is just because Nora is submissive, and lets it be that way.     Author Henrik Ibsen was a very brave man during his time period. He dared to be different and wrote about what people did not want to or desired to discuss because it was not the cultural norm. He mainly focused on women’s rights and their roles due to his startling upbringing and wanted the world to know that, in reality, everything was not always hunky-dory, especially when it came to women.     Sexuality or, in the case of A Doll’s House, feminism plays a huge role in how Nora ends the play for the readers. As I read through several criticisms of this play the main one that stuck out to me was how Nora was expected to bear children, keep her mouth shut, and do as Torvald said; so man rules and woman does as commanded. Nora didn’t see it that way she wanted to bring feminism to life and do for her and not of what was expected of her. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs describes of what Nora longs for, but not for her family but for herself and herself alone. As Kristin Brunnemer states in her critical essay “self-actualization, as Maslow described it, involves “the need to fulfill one’s potential, to be what one can be” … Nora yearns for self-actualization, in her desire for education, for time to ‘think over things for [her]self’,”(Brunnemer). I have learned from reading of this play that she feels like she is worth nothing but his little play mate and is not truly loved by the man she has given everything up for. She acts on the third stage of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs which states, “…because of Torvald’s new job she seeks something greater than security: self-worth. While revealing Nora’s ‘need to feel that other people respect and recognize [her] as worthwhile’” (Brunnemer).     A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, is a play about a woman who realizes that she is worth more than she has been given credit. Her whole life she was treated like a little doll; too fragile to do anything serious, too frail to be troubled with real business. She was the wife, mother and homemaker. The only things she was perceived as capable of were running the home, raising the children and looking pretty. This was a common stereotype for women in the 1880’s. Women were treated as possessions, not people. Women had a specific role they had to fill. They had to look just so, act just so, raise the children in a certain way, and keep up the house in a perfect way. Many women tried to fill this position of the “perfect housewife”. They wore corsets that put about 22 pounds of pressure on their internal organs, which caused cracked ribs, displacement of the liver and uterine prolapsed and collapsed lungs, all just to look the way men wanted them to.     In A Doll’s House, all of the characters appear to be one way however, by the end of the story, their real characteristics are made clear. Nora seems to be materialistic, unintelligent, and a “spend thrift.” (Ibsen, 1984) Even her close friend, Kristine Linde, thinks her to “know so little of the burdens and troubles of life.” (Ibsen, 1984, p. 15) While Nora may appear to be the typical homemaker who has no idea of what goes on in the real world, in reality she is an intelligent, motivated, strong-willed, and independent woman. Nora wants to be the ideal wife and mother, and tries to please her husband, Torvald, by looking pretty, making their home neat and clean, and taking care of Torvald by doing whatever he wants her to. Ironically she also has a mildly rebellious nature. Despite being told to not eat macaroons, for example, Nora slips one in her mouth now and then. Torvald constantly tells her to stop being such a ”squander bird” (Ibsen, 1984) and to save her pocket money, but ironically, her most significant rebellion is that she has taken a loan without telling Torvald. Eating sweets, spending extra money (to repay the loan), and having debt are all symbolic actions of Nora’s reality, which is different from what it appears to be.…
