Tim Burton is an American film director who is known for many quirky and gothic type films like Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and many more. His films explore concepts that are supernatural and would not feature realistic things in the real world, similar to the suburbs giving off by a dystopian feel and a man with scissor hands. Tim Burton use multiple things as his signature for his films but the most recurring ones are non-proportionally body features, incorporation of bats and dogs, and flashbacks.

In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka had a brief flashback of when he had braces and lived a candy-free childhood. Willy not being able to enjoy his childhood by having candy, I think is why he had created the chocolate factory so that other children would not have to experience what he experienced. I think that is what had encouraged Willy to make a factory for the children like him to try to enjoy their childhood while they still have it. Also in Edward Scissorhands, Edward had a flashback while Peg had turned on the automatic can opener, in which he had seen his creator reading a book to him before Edward had gotten the chance to get his hands because his creator had died. Tim Burton incorporates flashbacks to explain the character’s pain in that moment and also a moment when they feel lighthearted.
