Non Immediate Family
A significant challenge I have faced in the past years is the divorce of my parents. My parents divorced around four or five years ago, when I was nine or ten. This challenge has not affected me academically, because throughout the process of the divorce my parents always told me that I should not allow my problems at home to affect me as a person or academically, during this time I kept up a 4.0 GPA. Some of the positive things that have come out of this situation is growing my relationship with my immediate family, and also with my non-immediate family. Another positive outcome is me being able to see just how strong I am, the divorce was very hard for me and my sister but we stayed positive and were able to overcome this problem together,

I observed how people are while they have faced or are facing adversity, particularly at a young age. I am friends with a kid with divorced parents. His parents separated at a young age and I can't imagine what he went through, but all I know is that it benefitted him. Although he must've felt frustration and anger during the divorce, today he is more patient and tolerant. I believe that this is an excellent quality, and that he is now more resiliant. He might even be able to deal and withstand everything that life throws at him. Adversity at a young age has helped him to develop a more composed character.…

Obstacles and hardships are what shape a person. One of my many obstacles I had to face was getting use to my freshman year in high school. Due to me going to an Early college my freshman experience may have been a little different. Transitioning was one of the most difficult parts of the whole experience due to me not being able to really grasp what I had gotten myself into. My teachers were very firm in conducting their teaching strategies. I can recall a moment in time where I had turned in one of my first papers for my English class I was so excited for her to read it because I had worked all night on it trying to perfect it. A couple days passed and I got the paper back it was so many read marks on it if I didn't know any better I would…

A significant factor in my life is my mother’s health issues, especially her anxiety and depression, diagnosed in 2006. Since then she has had ups and downs to which my family has adjusted to deal with, and we have had to be prepared every day in case my mother suffers an attack or a relapse. After my mother’s first attacks I had to adapt quickly since I did not only had to be there for her, but also for my younger siblings who did not fully understood the situation at that time. I learned to take control of what to do to help my mother overcome her attacks and control her depression. At the same time, my mother had her first anxiety attacks, I started my junior year of high school as an International Baccalaureate student. This was a demanding program, but I was able to quickly learn how to manage my time to be there for my mother, without forgetting about my education. I believe my mother’s situation helped me develop different characteristics such as being more organized and to fully concentrate on what is important at the time. I believe I matured very quickly in order to be the support my family needed from me at that time, and in order for me to stay focused in school. This situation helped me be more patient and less nervous, and appreciate…

Looking back at the way my life has been so far I am both surprised and proud of myself for continuing to push myself to success. Using the fact that I am the child of two high school drop outs as the fuel to my fire. I will be the first in my family to graduate, setting a good example for my two younger sisters. I am the only child of my Father, and my Mother’s oldest daughter. After five years of being raised by a single mother, and having the support of our church, my mother got married and the ability to have one place I called ‘home’ was ruined. My family moved every year, sometimes two times a year since I was roughly five. I have attended a total of fourteen schools, always being ‘the new kid’… knowing I would never have those childhood friends to go back to. I managed to stay positive and keep my grades up, earning me a spot in the Cambridge program at North Marion Middle School, a program that offered Eleventh and Twelfth grade classes while you were in Eighth grade. Later, while my mother and her husband were going through a horrible divorce, my mother, my sisters, and I relocated to Immokalee Florida, where we have been living for the past two years, the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere. During the process of divorce, my stepfather filed for immediate removal of the minor children (my sisters) and was granted custody of my two sisters, five hours north of Immokalee.…

Everyone in life will have their own personal obstacles they will have to face in life. Some people will mentally shut down and give up when faced with a challenge. Others will take their challenges and use them to better themselves. The obstacles that I have faced in my life have never hit me harder than they have these past few months. This being my senior year, I always expected it to be the most laid back and relaxing year of my high school career. When in fact I set myself up for one of the biggest challenges of my life so far, by signing up for multiple online college classes, helping out with activities all over the school, and playing football for the first time since freshman year. Although, under all this immense pressure, this is where my true colors came out. I didn’t stop working to my full potential,…

One last challenge that I went through during my first year in the country was that I had more responsibility. Being totally on my own was not easy. I had to learn how to cook different kinds of food and how to behave and act without supervision. Even though it was very difficult in the beginning to rely on myself, it still made me confident about how much could I actually achieve. The only challenge for me after the first year was to academically do well and begin my journey of a thousand miles. Despite all the challenges, I decided that failure should never be a word in my…

In college life, my parents divorced, and the divorce strained me both mentally and financially. It was the biggest challenge of my life. My father felt that education is not worth it. In other words, my parents were financially strained since my childhood, and I have one sister. My parents could pay for only one of us to be in school. My mother pays our tuition by herself. Without my small business, I would not have joined high school or college. I promised myself to continue with education to make the life of my family better. I also wanted to prove that education is worth. The motivation was my mother’s hope, my professor’s lecture, our college library, and my dream. I thought that my sister felt that excessively. Academically, my GPA was…

My parents’ divorce hit me really hard. I was only ten-years-old at the time, but it filled me with so much anger and depression that I had to see a therapist to discuss how I felt. I kept fantasizing about my parents getting back together, even though I knew that that was not even a mere possibility. Everything seemed to be going wrong in my life. I was getting worse and worse grades as time passed and I lacked the motivation to improve them. Things only got worse when I found out that my mom met another man and was planning to marry him. I was far from ready to have another man in our house that was not my dad. During the first few months of him living with us, I completely ignored him. But I eventually learned that he was here to stay and that I should learn to accept him. I learned that some things are simply out of your control and you must adapt to them. Since then, my grades have progressed greatly and I have become a significantly better student. From these unforeseen circumstances, I had gained the ability to adapt to things when they don't go as planned, a trait that I have found to be very valuable in life.…
