Jack has a contrasting view of life on the island and his tribe just hunts and feasts. They do not even have shelters. Ralph and Piggy are the last to switch over to Jack’s tribe and when they do, all of the boys start chanting the hunting song they made up. “The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore” (Goulding 213). After the boys killed Simon, Ralph realized what he did was wrong and he left Jack’s tribe. This shows that bad people can get good people to do evil things, but the person will always be good at heart.…

“Therefore, all the telephone calls from the wives were the frantic and portentous beating of the wings of the death angels, as it were. When the final news came, there would be a ring at the front door—a wife in this situation finds herself staring at the front door as if she no longer owns it or controls it—and outside the door would be a man … come to inform her that unfortunately something has happened out there, and her husband's body now lies incinerated in the swamps or the pines or the palmetto grass, "burned beyond recognition," which anyone who had been around an air base for very long (fortunately Jane had not) realized was quite an artful euphemism to describe a human body that now looked like an enormous fowl that has burned up in a stove, burned a blackish brown all over, greasy and blistered, fried, in a word, with not only the entire face and all the hair and the ears burned off, not to mention all the clothing, but also…

After the boys’ hunting trip, Ralph reenacted how he stabbed the pig with Robert and the situation escalated from just the boys joking with one another and acting like Robert was actually a pig to the boys all began chanting, “Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in,” (Golding 114). Ralph was even handed a spear, and he almost used it on poor Robert. The first conflict was presented when Simon Arevalo's son explained to Juan that he needs to clear out of his house. Juan and his wife discussed their problem and said "They'll have to kill us.'' This introduces Juan's internal conflict. Juan is now faced with the decision of leaving and being homeless with a wife and child and letting the authorities win, or staying and putting him and his families life in danger. Juan states that the government should have no concern with his neighbourhood since its in a poor area. Juan remembers all his encounters in town where he was mistreated, first at Don Romulo Linares' store where he was told they are out of oil, then at a local drug store run by a man named Benavides. At Benavides' shop, Arevalo and an officer come in and stir up trouble with Juan. The officer asks whats going on and doesn't let Benavides answer before turning to Juan, the officer says "So you, too, are one of those who are resisting?'' We all came together that night as friends and family to enjoy each others company and watched as firebolts of red erupted in the sky. Katy and I sat side by side on a small concrete wall watching the fireworks in all their grandeur. Small white rockets would soar into the air and as they burst into sparks of amber rain, we would mimic the sound of their explosions and crackles. It was a beautiful night with a beautiful girl but on account of new Guatemalan friends it suddenly became quite short lived. Melanie and Francesca were back at their act and this time Katy had had enough. She exploded more violently than any firecracker that night; I tried to talk her down and tell her they were just playing and she asked me how I knew, and that’s when it hit me. I did not know, but I wanted to find out.…

On the surface, Patria is portrayed as the most mundane of the Mirabal sisters because she is very religious and family-oriented character. However, Alvarez uses these characteristics and emphasizes on the events that led up to her loss of faith in order to shape her motivations for joining the revolution. In the beginning of the novel, Patria had no interest in being part of the revolution. However, her views change when surprise invasion when she was on a religious retreat. During the explosions, Patria witnesses a traumatic event when she looks out the window and witnesses the death of a young boy. She relates to this boy as if he were her own son and the terrible scene had a profound impact on her. After this traumatic event, Patria began to doubt God’s ability to protect her and her family. In her narration, she says, “I'm not going to sit back and watch my babies die, Lord, even if that's what You in Your great wisdom decide” (Alvarez 162). This event had a compelling effect on this character in two aspects. In one aspect, since Alvarez emphasized on Patria loss of faith, she was able to to transform the character, Patria from an ordinary, religious woman into a strong member of the revolution. In another aspect, by highlighting this traumatic event in Patria’s life, Alvarez was able to create depth in…

Not all of us are blessed and able to come home to a roof over our head, food on the table, daily necessities, and happy moments to look back on. Some of us are fighting for shelter, starving for food, and praying for a smile. As I read Rachel and Her Children I found myself seeing things from the homeless perspective. Homeless does not necessarily mean they do not have a roof over there head. Homeless now to me means not having a place to feel safe and call your home your own.…

I felt expelled and exiled as they just left me there on the footpath in the chilling darkness of a Saturday night. “Get out of the car; we don’t want to be seen with you!” I can still hear those spiteful words playing over and over again in the back of my mind as I continue walking along the footpath of this unfamiliar suburb. I am completely alone with only my thoughts and the echo of my footsteps in the empty street. Upon hearing a faint resonance of a jingle, I look up again. I jump back as a black cat shoots across the path in front of me. I caught a glimpse of its dishevelled fur. It disappears, providing a screeching hiss that pierces the night air as it encounters a mammal in the undergrowth. They say a black cat at night is bad luck, but I honestly doubt my luck could have gotten any worse in light of recent events. It’s funny that the people you have loved and grown up with for almost your entire schooling journey can turn on you so effortlessly.…
