Your Grounded! Common words in other houses but not so much in mine. There was much that came to mind when thinking of high school memories. There was a time when I was left at my future high school when I was very young, suspended for one day, got my first detention academic wise is where I draw a blank. Passing school was always important but from the start on the outside look in it was an design for disaster high school, middle school and now college. My middle and high school career has always been very mild and content no real effort put forth, which may be a very strong reason I’m in English 99. I guess my story or memory wouldn’t make sense if I didn’t give a little background. I am the second youngest of six, I have five brothers and then there’s little ole me, so I guess you could assume getting all of us dressed and ready to go to school was an accomplishment in itself. School mornings were chaotic hell nights weren’t any better. There was a 6 to 1 ratio and I’m sure 3:00pm always came too soon for my mom. I can remember faintly a time when I was in middle school. There is a group of us heading towards the doors into the school and everyone had relatively the same classes . Someone in the group goes yeah “I have to get a good grade on this assignment or my mom’s going to flip” and without thought or hesitation came “Yeah I have to do good also”. Knowing my mother had accomplished her biggest feat of the morning (getting us to school). At this point in in high school and went on I became a very independent child. I mean I’ve had no choice. I’ve pretty much mastered my craft (for lack of a better word) of bare minimum making it. There was nothing to keep me going no sports no parents no teachers. As a new college student I see that that old tactic will never work. I know that bare minumun in college will never work. I plan to get very active in the school, I’ve been told that’s one of the better ways to keep grades up. Having something acadmic to grab ahold to and say you did that is a very high honor and something to be proud of. I will break that habbit of not having and academic school memories. Fall semester is vastly approaching and I look forward to getting involved with the school ,and become a more avtive student and create some of my first academic school memories.

Pure independence comes in various forms; obtaining a paying job, going to university or buying a home, these are what complete independence is made of and what each child should dream of. An adult, while they may need assistance at times, should be able to support themselves. An adult, while they may not have all the answers, should be able to provide information for themselves. An adult, while they may not be sure, should be able to make decisions for themselves. Adulthood is intertwined with individualism and self-reliance and learning how to be independent is the mark of adulthood.…

Throughout history school has been a place that a child attended on a daily basis. The school day consisted of basic mathematical skills, reading, and writing. After a person graduated or aged out of school, he or she often worked or tended to children and household chores. Mike Rose, author of I Just Wanna Be Average, was born in Los Angeles. He worked as a professor at UCLA and advocated for proper school placement after enduring a rather challenging circumstance while attending school (345). Rose outlines several of issues with the educational system, that society still sees today. While students today do not directly have the same issues as Mr. Rose, they do experience several other harsh aspects throughout their education…

    John Carrol "My Boy Life"

After reading the short story “My Boy Life” which is the memoir of John Carroll, I was from time to time envious of Carroll’s life but also relieved that I was not born in the 1800’s. Born just before the war of 1812 in Upper Canada, Carroll’s life was very simple. His prospective future occupations only consisted of a few and were predetermined from birth. How simple is life when everything is already set in stone? From the age of twelve to seventeen, Carroll worked at a tannery and as a currier. Carroll’s job was associated with his father’s work, his father being a saddler and harness-maker. Only grinding the bark in the tannery, Carroll’s life was consistent and did not require much effort of having to plan out his future. Sadly, much has changed and the current world does not allow me to walk a single, straight-forward path. With so many choices to be made, the world is more complex and much harder to survive in. I spend hours thinking of my future and what I want to be to no avail. To have our futures determined for us sometimes feels much better than having to choose between thousands of different paths we are able to take. Carroll is also not weighed down by expectations to complete schoolwork. In the century that Carroll lived in, education was not held in the highest regard. Children usually helped out with menial work in their house or assisted their father with errands having to do with the trade. This was because living through each and every day was much more troublesome and all the help was needed to keep food on their tables. On the contrary, I struggle with the sheer amount of homework and tests. It also adds to the tension when competing against all my peers for a better mark, which ultimately results in a better occupation. Even in high school, the competition is fierce, increasing every day. Even the most basic jobs are hard to get as jobs are few and there are many over-qualified people who are unemployed. Unlike during Carroll’s life, people…

We can all reflect back onto our transition from elementary to middle school. As we gained independence, we also obtained responsibilities. For example, in elementary we were always herded like cattle from class to class, but in middle school, however, we were the ones who were responsible for showing up to our classes on time, or at all. Our next steps will have us…

During this time, my younger brother was born and the downfall of my parent’s relationship began. Home life was difficult, but surrounding myself in books and science projects comforted me and I was happy with myself. I learned that drowning myself in novels and tutoring others was the best cure to feeling upset about either family or friend drama, so I used this to my advantage from seventh to eleventh grade. As a result, I received Academic Awards and was placed on the Honor Roll every year and was extremely proud of this version of myself that I had…

I had never been much good at doing things that didn’t arouse my passion. Even when I was a young girl, it was obvious that I had been born without the stick-to-it, nose-to-the-grindstone gene. I was stubborn, tenacious in my devotion to the people and things I loved, disdainful of everything else. There was no in-between. In high school I got straight A’s in English and flunked math. When it came time for college, I enrolled at NYU because it was the only way I could think of to live in Greenwich Village and get my parents to pick up the tab. But I rarely made it to classes and dropped out one month into my sophomore year.…

High school is supposed to be the best years of a teenager’s life and for me it was. The first high school I ever attended was Eldorado high school, home of the Sundevils. The first day of my freshman year I woke up to my mom’s voice that morning, “Get up!” she yelled from my room door. It was the perfect morning, the smell of pancakes and bacon coming from the kitchen and my dad ironing my clothes before he goes to work. The first day of my freshman year was just like any other freshman’s. I walked to each of my classes nervously in those crowded and long hallways but mostly filled with excitement because I knew there was a lot of exciting adventures to come. After the first couple of months I was no longer a random girl that walked the wall ways. Everyone I associated with called me Nayynayy, that nickname stuck with me throughout my whole high school career.…

High school has been an unyielding path. These four years of my high school career have had some positive and even some negative conflicts. Initially, I was very naive and I did not put much effort into school. My grades had dropped at a point where I was having some difficulty to bring them back up, mainly because I was never too strong in subjects such as math or English. But that was an issue that I had to face by worrying less and concentrating more. However, throughout these four years of high school I have improved my ability to learn and also have identified the creative and thoughtful side of me and with these skills I have given back to my community by making it cleaner and more efficient for the next generation. Thankfully, with…

My mother motivated me to examine my academic performance, Lillian did not. Those last two weeks of school I worked diligently, doing whatever necessary to raise my grade; I finished the second semester with a D. As my eighth grade year began, I was determined to not allow myself to be distracted from my academic responsibilities. This was a determination I carried on to high school.…

“Whap!” A spiraling red dodge ball crashes into my face and suddenly I am awake. The outcries from the eighth-grade girls around me pull me back into the packed room full of 200 middle schoolers. As I look around I realize there is no place I would rather spend my Friday mornings than volunteering with somewhat smelly middle schoolers as a Campus Life leader. Here, I discovered my passion for working with middle school students. They helped me discover that I wanted to change my major from Elementary Education to Middle School Education. Here at UNK, I am a part of SEAN and participate in student directed one acts. These activities are a fun break from studying and I plan on continuing with these activities throughout my years here at UNK. In high school, I…

    Growing Up In The Military

Moving from school to school as a result of my Father’s job was difficult at first, but I always managed to adjust well and find my place. As a young child, specifically in elementary school, I absolutely loved to read and can say that some of my fondest memories growing up were in the library getting lost in the plethora of books they had to offer. Unfortunately, today I no longer enjoy reading as I did before, but can genuinely say that my excitement to learn is still there. My favorite subjects were always English and math, but American history is the one subject that I still am passionate about today and I can credit that to my eighth grade teacher, Mr. Gamble. Not only was Mr. Gamble my American history teacher, but he also taught my leadership class. Everything he taught was with great purpose behind it and he genuinely made learning fun by putting his own creative and exciting spin on everything. A monumental aspect of my academic life was when I was President of my middle school in eighth grade. Mr. Gamble also supervised me as President and truly inspired me to be a leader through and through. It was also during my elementary academic life that I first began to play sports, in which I played volleyball, softball, and lacrosse for both the school and recreational leagues. As a result of playing sports, I learned that I love to work with others in a team setting and that leading others is something that I thrive…

I furiously ripped a sheet of paper out of my notebook and glared at the blank lines I had to fill. My mom assigned a creative writing paper to my daily schoolwork load. Up until seventh grade all I had known was the public school system. In public school, I had acquired an unhealthy habit of getting away with the least amount of work while still maintaining an above average grade. I had the assumption that school would be even easier, having my mom as my teacher. To my surprise, my mom actually expected more effort from me than any of my other teachers in public school. My mom rudely awakened me to the fact that true success did not come without struggle.…

    Not My Business

The poem 'Not my business' is about a person who tries to remain detached of the recurring violence caused by the military and does not care about others’ suffering as long as he is not affected. It is a dramatic monologue by the Nigerian Niyi Osundare who uses the narrator to convey his opinion that injustice should push people to unite and fight against together. It is supposed to mirror the Nigerian society but can be applied to any part of the world where people refuse to rise up against injustices. In this poem, the poet has used a narrator to convey his opinion towards the socio-political environment. The narrator's tone in this poem is selfishly unconcerned about his friends’ and neighbors’ suffering and oppression as long as his life is unaffected, thus reflecting the title 'Not my business'. Ironically, despite his belief that if he does not involve himself in these tragedies he will not be affected, he himself is taken away at the end of the poem.…

There should be a saying in the financial industry that goes, “Don’t teach me about money unless you have some.” That should pretty much be the requirement in every industry and area of life if someone wants to teach or to persuade or to motivate someone to do anything. One must mirror or language what one is representing, i.e., look the part, walk the walk, and talk the talk. Therefore, before one goes out to save the world in any area of life, one must first save himself.…
