"Today Bigger Thomas and that mob are strangers, yet they hate. One such phrase is, "They hate...." The hatred that is felt by the white mob is a product of their guilt. The tale of the first Thomas in this chapter is about the Thomas from the Bible. This Thomas had a great importance. He was involved in three big events in the Bible. The first being when he went with Jesus to see Lazarus. The second is at the Lord’s Supper, where Thomas didn’t fully understand how everyone was supposed to get to heaven after Jesus died. He was unsure of how to get there if Jesus didn’t tell where he was going. Later, Jesus explains that He is the Way, and they would all meet again. The final story of the biblical Thomas would be “Doubting Thomas”. This story describes how Thomas would not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he saw Him himself. Jesus then goes to say one of his famous…

Thomas More’s oath to God is how he identifies himself and it is very important to him. While Thomas is a very honest and pure man, his steward makes a comment saying, “ My master Thomas More would give anything to anyone. Some say that’s good and some say that’s bad, but I say he can’t help it – and that’s bad. Because some day someone’s going to ask him for something that he wants to keep; and he’ll be out of practice ” (Bolt 1.17). The steward says this right after Rich takes the silver cup Thomas gives to him. The silver cup is a bribe a woman gives to Thomas, but Thomas does not accept bribes. The steward shows how kind Thomas is by not accepting the bribe and giving the bribe away. This quote foreshadows Thomas’s death, because the steward is predicting how King Henry will ask Thomas to support his divorce. The steward notes how Thomas would do just about anything for anyone, but Thomas will not be able to support the divorce because Thomas cannot give away his oath to God. This causes King Henry to build up resentment…

I once went through a bad breakup and was very broken. My closest friends were there for me, and my mother was supportive, but all they did was tell me I’d find better fish in the sea, when all I wanted at the time was the fish that swam away. Everyone around me noticed my pain but there was a girl in one of my classes who only two years before really disliked me. Maybe she felt sorry for me, but however she felt made her want to be a friend to me. She was always there to defend me, listen to me, and put up with my pathetic sobs, until I snapped back to reality. We’ve been best friends since. This is why I found it ironic that at the end of the story, after all Thomas had done, Victor did not grow closer to him and become his friend again. If I were Thomas, I would feel hurt and taken advantage of. It seems as if Victor was not grateful or appreciative of the friendship and support Thomas offered. And for some reason, Thomas did not expect Victor to be his friend. Thomas understands that people are here to take care of one another and offered his money to Victor to take care of him during his crisis and the only thing he…

In the story This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona by Sherman Alexie, Thomas Buildsthe-Fire is the character who is othered. This is a short story about a young Native American named Victor, who is poor and living on a reservation. He needs to find a way to travel to Phoenix, Arizona to retrieve his father’s ashes, get the last of his father’s money, and his truck. The only way he can make the trip is to take a hand out from Thomas in exchange for taking Thomas with him. Victor feels uncomfortable asking Thomas for a favor because they haven’t spoken for a long time, and because nobody ever talks to Thomas. The main reason Thomas is othered by the people on the reservation is because he is always seen talking to himself, and he likes to tell the same stories over and over again ( Alexie, 1993). Throughout the short story Victor and Thomas’s relationship is revealed through flashbacks to events when they were kids. During one flashback, Victor remembers time when a group of Indian boys othered Thomas. Thomas had jumped off the roof of the school and for a few seconds appeared to be flying. Everyone else was too scared to try such a stunt. When Thomas crashed to the ground, all the boys made up a chant about Thomas “breaking his wing”. The real reason they…

The theme of the story is that even that even though times are tough there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. We see this when Tommy goes through conflicts with his family and his community. His family didn’t really listen to his problem. He feels depressed, disappointed, and confused on what to do. Lewis Gardner emphasized this during the first part of the story when Tommy tried to tell his parents they started to talk about a different topic. The community also ignored him. When he told his doctor about his problem the doctor seemed as if he didn’t care about him at all. When he tries to tell the police chief about his problem he started talking in between Tommy’s sentences. In the end Tommy leaves his house and meets a girl who becomes his friend by the name of Mary who has the same problem.…
