My childhood is something I don’t often reflect on. There were good times as well as bad, and unfortunately, it’s hard to weigh out which ones affected me the most. I was a normal child, a little on the rambunxious side, and often felt that if there was something that needed to be said, I wanted to say it…so I did. I remember the first time I decided to brave ‘the rapids’, and everyone thought it was funny, but after a while, that didn’t bode well with my parents because sometimes I said the wrong things at the wrong time. When that happened, I was corrected very quickly, and sometimes, my family would talk loud and fast so that I couldn’t have the chance to jump into the conversations.
As I reached my teenage years, I learned to pick and choose what to say, but always remained bold enough to be truthful. I feel that if you are real, and someone brings up a topic of discussion that is open to an opinion, that opinion shouldn’t be held back…even if it so brutally honest that someone may take offense to it. If you evaluate the nature of my comments and look within yourself, you may find the same result that I did with my own self-evaluation, and that the reason for the offensive feeling may not have been what was said, but may reflect directly on something you may be in denial about. Understanding how we think is an important part of understanding ourselves, and how we approach problems can influence our success in resolving problems.
