No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was created to be the standard by which a school’s success or failure is measured, and as a result has been the catalyst for theoretical unproven strategies and plans designed to improve academic performance in schools identified as failing in the American education system. Theorists believe that it was needed to correct the lack of accountability in the education system. However, history provides us with evidence of accountability dating back to the infancy of the formal education system in America. It is also difficult to find evidence that any meaningful research was put into NCLB, or, who did the research. Many of these are based on supposedly proven research.In many cases, this research finds its roots in someone’s perspective of a perceived problem or situation. Long (2012) states that perspectives may be best viewed as models. He continues by writing that perspectives make assumptions about society, each one attempt to integrate various kinds of information about society, models give meaning to what we see and experience, each perspective focuses on different aspects of society, and certain consequences result from using a particular model. Take a model on how to successfully produce a product in the business industry, and apply it to the field of education. Establish a set of measurement tools to continuously check and re-check the manufactured product until the process results in perfection. This is a proven practice in industry. However, this formula will continuously fail when applied to living beings because no to humans are alike. In an interview, President Bush said that when NCLB is re-authorized, he hoped that they would not weaken it and would continue to progress toward excellence by measuring progress toward the absolute (Rotherham, 2012).
