Nitration of Toluene
Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: The Nitration of Toluene
Abstract
This industrially important reaction of EAS: The Nitration of Toluene exhibits how the attack of a nitronium ion would give out major and minor products at different positions of toluene. This is an electrophilic substitution mechanism. Mixture of concentrated sulphuric and nitric acid will produce a nitronium ion, which will attack ortho-, meta- and para- positions at Toluene. (Mechanism at appendix).
Introduction/Procedure
Toluene is cooled down to almost 0’C because the overall reaction is quite exothermic. High temperatures can cause the experiment to explode and also possible formation of di and tri nitrotoluene compounds.
After nitration, this experiment goes through series of purification/cleaning procedures. This makes sense because we would not want inorganic ions floating around in our final product.
After the reaction is complete, steam bath is required to separate the two layers of mixture. Lower layer is extracted since it’s aqueous layer filled with H2SO4, HNO3 and H2O. Add Et2O, aq Na2CO3 and water to multiply the product so that it can be extracted again. Bottom aqueous layer loaded with Na+, HCO3-, Cl- is extracted using Pasteur pipet. Dry the product with CaSO4 thoroughly. This step is important because if there’s any water residue left, it will show when drying ether at rotary evaporator step. Also, water is incompatible to GC. After vacuum filtration, we can add ether and use rotarary evaporator to dry out the ether and then if the product is clean, it is ready of GC and further procedures.

qDiscussion of Results Under normal conditions (low temperature/low acid concentration), this reaction would give out three products of ortho-, meta- and para- nitrotoluene. But, in this experiment, traces of 2,4 – dinitrotoluene and 2,6 – dinitrotolune are observed which in turn can be concluded that experiment could be done at lower temperature and at lower acidity.

The electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction is the attack of a benzene ring on an electrophilic species resulting in the substitution of a proton with a functional group. The electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction nitration is used to nitrate methyl benzoate and acetanilide with a nitronium ion. Crystallization was used to purify the product. The melting point was used to determine its purity and the regiochemistry of the products. The methyl benzoate reaction product, methyl nitrobenzoate, was determined to be meta-substituted and the acetanilide reaction product, nitroacetanilide, was determined to be para-substituted.…

The mechanism for the synthesis of 3-nitrochalcone is presented in Figure 2. The alpha carbon on the acetophenone is deprotonated, followed by the attack of the alpha carbon anion on the carbonyl carbon on the 3-nitrobenzaldehyde. Next, is the protonation of the oxygen from the 3-nitrobenzaldehyde, which is then followed by an elimination reaction where this acts as a leaving group. The product is the trans-alkene present in the product.…

For both of the organic acid and organic base extraction, the addition of the respective inorganic acid or inorganic base (HCl or NaOH) to the three-component mixture caused an immiscible appearance of the solution in the separatory funnel. By briskly shaking the separatory funnel with the mixed components created a build up of pressure which was released through the stopcock forming small disappearing bubbles within the tip of the separatory funnel. Once the funnel was placed back into the iron ring and the stopper was removed, the distinct upper ether layer had an oily appearance and a visible barrier separating it from the lower water-organic base or organic acid layer. After pouring out the ether layer into a beaker and adding anhydrous sodium sulfate, all that remained in the funnel was the neutral extract.…

Nitrite can be produced through a bacterial reduction from nitrate. This reduction can occur in the oral cavity of humans. Nitrate is commonly found in fertilisers for food crops so it’s also found on the outside of fruits and vegetables (Mygind, 1991). This is relevant because nitrite can have consequences for our overall health. It can react with secondary amines to form nitrosamines. Research has shown that some nitrosamines can cause cancer (Mygind, 1991).…

    Refining

 It is a two-step process. In the first step, the feedstock LPG or light naphtha is contacted in the trayed extractor vessel with an aqueous caustic solution containing UOP's proprietary liquid catalyst. The caustic solution reacts with mercaptans(RSH) and extracts them. The reaction that takes place in the extractor is: 2RSH + 2 NaOH → 2NaSR + 2 H2O The second step is referred to as regeneration and it involves heating and oxidizing of the caustic solution leaving the extractor. The oxidations results in converting the extracted mercaptans to organic disulfides (RSSR) which are liquids that are water-insoluble and are then separated and decanted from the aqueous caustic solution. The reaction that takes place in the regeneration step is: 4NaSR + O2 + 2H2O → 2RSSR + 4NaOH  The feedstock entering the extractor must be free of any H2S. Otherwise, any H2S entering the extractor would react with the circulating caustic solution and interfere with the Merox reactions. Therefore, the feedstock is first "prewashed" by flowing through a batch of aqueous caustic to remove any H2S. The reaction that takes place in the prewash vessel is: H2S + NaOH → NaSH + H2O…
