Nettie Holliday Thompson was interviewed in South Carolina on July 20, 1994. Nettie was born in Brunswick, Georgia January 24, 1912. Nettie states in her interview, “We didn’t have too much of a problem during segregation because we was so tied up and mixed up.” (Thompson, 1994) Jim Crow laws nearly changed the way colored people lived their life on a daily, by segregating schools, restrooms, transportation, parks, restaurants, and much more. (Rocky Mountain PBS, 1996-2010) Thompson remembers living in a mixed community, her neighbor's next door were white. My Mentor that stands out in my mind is Staff Sergeant Barbara of MCCS (Marine Corps Community Services). Staff Sergeant Barbara has inspired me in many ways as well as motivated me to be a better and harder working Marine. He knew what it takes to make a warehouse great. I was only able to work with him for just over a Month which makes what I learned in such a short period time so important to me. I had some good mentors in my past but never had any truly great leaders that had this kind of effect on my life.…

She also positively influenced her followers by visiting her troops at Tilbury and giving an incredibly motivating speech. She showed respect for her subjects by meeting with them personally and making them feel as though their opinions mattered. Additionally, by…

“Leaders are persons who, by word and/or personal example, markedly influence the behaviors, thoughts, and/or feelings of a significant number of their fellow human beings.” When I initially heard this quote and was asked to write about a leader who exemplified I immediately thought of Nelson Mandela. The qualities of a good leader can be disputed among a variety of different skills and abilities. Such as being honest, being a delegate, the ability to communicate, having confidence, having commitment to what they believe in, and the creativity to solve any problem that comes their way. If a leader lacks any of these qualities he will be unable to move the cause forward thus failing as a leader. Few can possess these qualities and become a great leader. For to be a great leader you must have these qualities and can move people in a way few can. These qualities and more can be shown in one of the world’s greatest leaders Martin Luther King Junior. He paved the way for African American rights and promoted peaceful protest rather…
