Nikki's Life-Personal Narrative
The fire escape saved Nikki’s life.
Before falling off her aunt’s coffeehouse, she grabbed hold of the black railing and righted herself. Black smoke rolled out of the chimneys, doors, and windows. The explosion had left the place intact, but the initial blast was great enough to bounce her into midair. Who knew if more were on the way, or what had caused it in the first place.
Nikki coughed as she heaved herself into the open hallway window. Unsteady on her feet, she groaned and rubbed her tired, scratchy eyes. “Vanna!”
Sena ran from their aunt and uncle’s bedroom with Sierra’s hand in his. “Are we gonna die!?”
Vanna ran from the bathroom. “Where’ve you been? I’ve looked everywhere for you!”
“I was on the roof. What’s going on?”
“Are we gonna die?” Sena sobbed. “Are we being arrested?”

Then smoke congested her head. “Sena, take your sister down the fire escape and cover your mouths. Now.”
When they pushed Sierra down the metal staircase, the two teens then ran the opposite way down the house’s staircase.
“Mom!” Vanna screamed. “Dad, where are you?”
His father stood in the middle of the floor. Thick soot covered his skin and clothes. “Where’s Sierra and Sena?” he asked.
“Down the fire escape. Dad, what happened?”
“The stove broke.”
“The entire house shook!” Nikki argued.
Del opened windows for the smoke to escape. “Out. Vanna, go.”
Trained to abide by his father’s softly spoken word, Vanna ran out the front door.
“Del, what’s going on?” Nikki asked. “Let me help.”
He shoved her out like some stray cat.
“Del!”
But he ran back into the smoking coffeehouse, disappearing into the haze with a fire
