ESSAY QUESTION:

Elie says "I was the accuser. God the accused. My eyes were open and I was alone -- terribly alone in a world without God and without man. Without love or mercy." What has caused Elie to feel this way and what does he mean by saying "without God and without man"? Where have they gone? Be specific.

ESSAY ANSWER:

"I was the accuser, God the accused. My eyes were open and I was alone terribly alone in a world without God and without man. Without love or mercy." This quote clearly illustrates the loss of faith when one is put through hardships.

This quote is very stong and filled with meaning. When Elie first arrices at the concentration camps he is very faithful, but as time goes on and things get harder his faith deteriorates. When Elie says "I was terribly alone in a world without God and without man", he is saying that God has deserted him. Elie thinks that all of his life he has prayed to this God but when he needs him he is no where to be found. Elie also feels he is deserted by mankind because they are not helping either, Elie feels isolated and alone where there is no faith or humanity. There is only survival instincts and yourself.

Therefore it might be said taht Elie has lost all faith in God and mankind. The only person he has left to deoend on is
