Farming has come a long way in terms of techniques and technology, gone are the days of horse drawn plows and hand planted crops. In present times farming has become much more advanced and controlled by large corporations who are appear to be slowly shutting down these family run farms who refuse to use their GMO altered seeds. There are many controversies about this topic with both sides claiming the other is the problem.
Genetically modified organisms are more or less a new species created by scientists by doing this they can transfer genes in the genetic makeup of any plant or even animal. GMOs are now a major player in the agricultural industry companies that sell these altered seeds are now huge billion dollar corporations controlling the majority of the agriculture in the United States and it now appears they are attempting to completely eliminate all farms that refuse to use their GMO altered seeds. The purpose of a GMO altered crop is to increase yields and also to reduce the amount of chemicals that are used.
It is now very difficult to truly know what is in your food because even though the food is altered the company is not obligated to specify that there are GMOs in the food. Many people seem to be on the side of the farmer who believes he is being muscled out by his competition, but I do believe that too truly have enough food to go around you need these massive companies producing what can basically be described as a seed on steroids to truly meet the worlds agricultural needs. This is a topic that will be debated for a long time and the conflict that follows will not end either, but as long as we have a rising population with ever growing agricultural needs the big businesses will always be necessary in my opinion.
