THE CRAZE FOR CERTIFICATE BY NIGERIANS
In recent years there is this general tendency that an increasing number of Nigerians seem to pay more attention on getting various certificates from undergraduate certificates to professional certificates. They are so many types of certificates, the growing tendency among Nigerians to get all kinds of certificates has now involved into a craze. The word craze means an enthusiastic interest in something that is shared by many people but that usually does not last very long.
Nigerians believe that certificate is a tool that can give them more opportunities for getting a good job compared to others who don’t have one. A lot of people are in school today not because they want to get head knowledge of what they are for, but as a result of the craze for these certificates. What then is certificate? According to the oxford advances learners dictionary a certificate is an official document that may be used to prove that the facts it states are true . It is also an official document proving that you have completed a course of study or passed an examination, when you check the definition of certificate above, it has lost it’s true meaning to students and Nigerians as a whole, certificate is meant to be an approval of fact that one actually did something but it has lost the fact and the truthfulness behind it because sometimes money is being paid to acquire some of these certificates illegally.
Recently the phenomenon of certificate craze has become a bug concern to the public. It is also a new craze in the university which seem like a routine activity on campus. For certificates to play a vital role when students look for decent job, We can attribute this phenomenon to several reasons first of all, students who are keen on acquiring all kinds of certificates maintain that the more certificates they acquire, the greater their chances of getting a better job or position after graduating from university.
