Nick's Abnormal Behavior In Gone Girl
“Gone Girl” is not your typical kind of mystery novel or movie. We start off with a couple, Nick and Amy, who are seen as your everyday normal married couple, whatever that means now a day. This soon changes when one day Nick gets a call from his neighbor due to suspicious signs and heads home to find Amy has vanished with no trace in sight. After taking a look through the house Nick decides to call the police, they soon show up and start to investigate and question Nick immediately; Nick soon becomes a suspect in the disappearance of Amy.
Right from the start Nick seems very disconnected and unwary of Amy’s whereabouts. This is one of the first signs of Nick’s abnormal behavior. The investigator starts to ask some question about Amy’s daily life and friends, which Nick is unable to answer, making the investigator and the cop uneasy. While looking for clues in the house the detectives discover an envelope labeled “Clue one” which Amy has left behind for Nick to find the answer to. As time passes, more evidence is uncovered, making Nick look more and more like the suspect.

Nick’s abnormal behaviors would fall under Axis II which deals with personality disorders. When Amy first goes missing Nick doesn’t seem too care too much about it; everyday people would be panicking maybe even crying. In contrast Nick keeps his cool and walks the detectives through the home without hesitation. Nick also mentioned in the movie that he was starting to feel a sense of relief knowing Amy was missing, which is strange because any normal person would be anxious to have their loved one at their side immediately. After Amy returns home and tells Nick everything including her plan and how she killed Desi, Nick develops a fear towards Amy. Nick then becomes a bit paranoid, not wanting to sleep in the same bed as Amy or wanting anything to do with

The first paragraphs depict the personality change in Nick when considered maintaining the advice of his father to him. It is obvious that Gatsby presents a challenge to the way in which Nick is accustomed to thinking about the world. It is clear from the story opening moments that Gatsby will not be what he initially appears to be. Many aspects of Gatsby’s world are intriguing because they are slightly amiss—for instance, he seems to throw parties at which he knows none of his guests. The road from West Egg to New York City exemplifies decay. It is a "valley of ashes," a place of uninterrupted desolation.…

On page 64 he says, "But I am slow thinking and full of interior rules that act as they brakes on my desires, and I knew that first I had to get myself out of that tangle back home. I'd been writing letters once a week and signing them 'love, Nick,' and all I could think of was how when a certain girl played tennis, a faint moustache appeared on her upper lip. Nevertheless there was a vague understanding that had to be tactfully broken off before I was free." Nick goes by the emotions he has by the moment. He does not know what commitment is. He 'loved' this girl back home, but as soon as he found someone else attractive he suddenly forgot what made him love the girl back home. Now she would only get in the way of love. This proves love to Nick is only a possession, and when he did not have his possession with him, he found a replacement. It did not even matter to him that Miss Baker was dishonest and immoral. Some readers can be hugely irritated by Nick as a narrator because he can be seen as lacking insight and very unperceptive ultimately this makes the reader feel wary about trusting Nick. He cannot give an accurate account of what has happened between Gatsby and Daisy before he met them. To make up for his lack of information, he turns to other sources such as Jordan Backer and Gatsby himself. At various points in the novel, Nick’s conversations with other characters serve to inform the reader about events that took place before Nick’s involvement in the story. In chapter IV, Nick listens to Jordan Baker describe the history of the romance between Gatsby and Daisy. However he uses direct speech and para-phrases what she has said so how do we know what we hear is accurate.…

The strongest representation of Nick’s growing maturity is the fact that he realises that Tom and Daisy are both weak and gutless people. This understanding was only obtained when Nick looked for what was on the “inside”. The quote “They are careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made...” is really powerful and Fitzgerald is warning…

In the beginning of the book, he views her as a cool woman with much underneath the surface. He begins to admire her for her athleticism, her looks, and her personality, which Nick learns is not the personality for him. Towards the end of the book, Nick is confronted by Jordan after they had broken up and she tells him that she is engaged with another man, which Nick doubts. He doubts this because of Jordan’s ability to toy with the feelings of others, especially other single men. She plays with the feelings of men, while having no intention of getting involved in a relationship. This is confirmed when Nick sees her and describes her as having “her chin raised a little jauntily”, which again symbolizes her arrogance (177). Nick views her as a self centered person with a peculiar sense about her, for example when he first sees her wearing a white dress indoors for what seemed like a long time. Finally, Nick finds the errors of his ways and breaks it off with Jordan, ending the damaging toll the relationship had upon Nick’s mental well being. Nick does not recognize her arrogant personality, something he can’t handle, nor does he want to attempt to handle. Early in the story Nick is captured and somewhat intimidated by Jordan but as he begins to understand her true personality, he sees how different she actually…

Nick is a person with a number of contrasting allegiances within the book. For example he finds connections between himself and Gatsby, both serving in the War and that the both come from the ‘Mid-West’. However, Nick is also connected to the Buchannan’s: he is Daisy’s cousin, he comes from a wealthy background and he went to the same college as Tom Buchannan. Also, Nick says that his father told him to remember that “not everyone has had the advantages you’ve had” which tells us that Nick does not discriminate against people from other backgrounds and classes. All in all, these bits of personal information make the reader think of Nick as a well rounded, non-judgemental character.…
