Nick Carraway – Heroic Homecoming

A hero is someone we admire for bravery or nobility. Nick Carraway possesses a certain kind of nobility – he is a character that others need by their side as a companion or a helper. His holding off on making judgments of others is a quality that even Tom wants proximity to. But Nick eventually does make judgments, and he doesn’t keep them to himself. Significantly, he not only breaks off with Jordan Baker, he reminds her that he is 30, and is five years too old to lie to himself and call it honour. Heroes make poor liars.
A hero is decisive. For Nick, this comes in the form of rejecting the lifestyle of the millionaires, in particular its snobbery, dishonesty, and consumption. This is a quiet triumph,

What is it to be a hero / heroine? Is it just a matter of goodness? Is it possible for someone whose character is flawed – or suddenly revealed to be flawed - to still retain this status? Geraldine Brooks’ novel, ‘Year of Wonders’ leaves us with such questions and reminds us that these are complex considerations. A ‘hero’ (or ‘heroine’) can be defined as, “a person who is greatly admired for their noble actions and nobility of spirit”. In terms of ‘Year of Wonders’, we can flesh this out more clearly – those we deem ‘heroic’ are seen as such because of their selfless devotion to the welfare of others. They serve others without…

A hero is “a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities,”(Google). There are many examples of heroes in literature, such as Odysseus or Harry Potter. There are, however, some characters in stories that do not fit this category as well as others. This group of people is called “antiheroes.” An antihero is like a hero, although this person may not have the same qualities as a hero, or may display non-heroic actions. In Lois Lowry’s The Giver, the main character, a boy named Jonas, is an antihero. Jonas does not act particularly heroic in the novel, and does not fit the definition of a true hero in his qualities.…

Do you know what a hero is? A hero to me is someone who has courage to stand up against things and that risks his own life for something small. They are also outstanding achievements. “Y’all were heroes from the beginning.” (Hinton,107) I believe that someone in the book “The Outsiders” named Johnny is a hero. He is because he saved Ponyboy, he saved all the kids from the church that caught on fire, and he gave Dally something to live for.…

The main protagonist in fictional books or films is often labeled as a hero. In 1984 by George Orwell, the plot follows a man named Winston who is trying to rebel against the totalitarian government called Ingsoc. Ingsoc, also known as the Party, defeats Winston and because he is defeated he does not remain a hero in the reader’s eyes. Winston’s lack of cunning, lack of courage, and lack of effort to defeat the Party shows that he does not fit the description of a hero.…

We begin our story with Nick Carraway; he introduces who he is, and how he behaves. Nick is a humble and judgment free type of gentleman. “In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgements, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran boxes.” (Fitzgerald 1) says Nick. This shows Nick’s reasoning for being judgement free. Not only is Nick a humble and judgement…

A “hero” is defined as a person admired or idealized for their courage or noble qualities. To me, a hero is someone who will fight against the odds for what they believe is right, sometimes making a personal sacrafise for the benefits of others. In the book, the Scarlett Letter, author Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts main character Hester Prynne as the hero. Although it may be true that Hester commits the sin of adultery, we must look beyond that and on to how this sin not only beneficial to Hester, but the town as a whole.…
