Rationale
The National Greening Program of the government under
E.O. No. 26 s. 2011 stressed the importance of making our
schools an avenue for effective implementation of Gulayan
sa  Paaralan Program. This project is tied up with the
Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry, under
DepEd Memorandum No. 191, s. 2013. It aims to promote
production of foods that are rich in protein, carbohydrates, vitamin A and iron as major input to school feeding. This will also lessen   nutritionally imbalanced or wasted students, and support the greening the environment.

Rationale
The general objective of this project is to promote
food security in schools and communities through
self- help food production activities and it also serves
as an avenue to develop values among learners and
inculcate appreciation of agriculture as a life support
system.

Section 1: Objectives
The project “Gulayan sa Paaralan” aims to: 

1. Promote the level of awareness on the health and nutritional aspect as well as economic benefits of establishing household and community gardens.
2. Establish school gardens to serve as food source of commodities to sustain supplementary feeding
3. Increase production of selected fruits and vegetables that are rich sources of protein, calories, vitamins and minerals.
4. Showcase small-scale food production models in schools for the household/community to replicate purposely to promote family food security; and
5. Develop among learners the values of good health and nutrition, industry, love of labor, and caring of others.

Section 2: Program Components
Creation of classroom-based vegetable garden
Every classroom shall establish a vegetable garden
to serve as ready source of vegetables to sustain
supplementary feeding.

Variety of vegetables to be planted
To address micronutrient deficiencies, variety of
vegetables must be propagated such as the
following:
a. rich in protein (leguminous)
b. rich in calories (root crops)
c. rich in vitamin A and iron
(green leafy vegetables)
d. malunggay and fruit-bearing trees
