Stanislaw Lem's novel Solaris tells the story of Kris Kelvin, a psychologist, who goes to the ocean planet Solaris to study the phenomena taking place there. Upon arrival at Station Solaris, which hovers over the surface of the planet, he is warned by the scientists on board that they have been receiving mysterious visitors. Kris first encounters one of these visitors outside of Gibarian's room, but does not have one of his own until he wakes up to see his deceased wife, Rheya, sitting in the room with him. The divine person of Seth said to the divine person of Horus: ‘How beautiful are your buttocks, how vital! […] Stretch out your legs …’13 And the Person of Horus said: ‘Watch out; I shall tell [this]!’” Then he ran and told his mother Isis, that Seth desired to sodomize him. “And she said to him: ‘Beware! Do not approach him about it! When he mentions it to you another time, then you shall say to him: “It is too painful for me entirely, as you are heavier than me. My strength [backside] shall not support your strength [erection]…”’14 Then when he gives you his strength, place your fingers between your buttocks. … Lo, he will enjoy it exceedingly (?). In the novel One of Ours Cather illustrates World War 1 different then most. From the somewhat graphic descriptions of injuries and death to the calm village scenes to meditations on what it must have meant for so many young men to finally find meaning in their lives just when they were most at risk of losing everything. She often romanticized the war but at the same time she made it well balanced. She showed the war as a monstrous thing that was fought by decent-hearted people in defense of their fellow human beings.…
In “Two Kinds,” the main character, Jing-mei, is portrayed as a skeptical, independent, and strong-willed young girl. These attributes are shown through her lack of faith in herself and her disobedience towards her mother. The first sign of Jing-mei’s skepticism is when she becomes impatient with the prodigy inside her. In fact, she imagines her inner prodigy telling herself that, “‘If you don’t hurry up and get me out of here, I’m disappearing for good”’ (Schilb & Clifford 241). Another instance where Jing-mei’s skepticism becomes apparent is when she looks into the mirror and realizes “that it would always be this ordinary face” staring back at her (Schilb & Clifford 241). Previous to that, she had held out hope that she…
Neda was a free spirited individual who was against, and even rebelled against the complete government control of Iran who unfortunately lost her life because of it. As the filmed mentioned a few times, she was a rebel. In my eyes she was not a rebel in a negative way, but a rebel in a way that she wanted to be able to show her individuality, her own personal style, and did not want to be under the complete control and dictatorship of the Iranian regime. She stood for independence, individuality, and a free-spirit lifestyle that we are so very fortunate of in this country. She unfortunately lost her life because of her desire for independence as a woman, in my opinion she was assassinated, it was not just a random act of violence that claimed her life but rather a cold blooded murder! I believe that she was targeted! As the film stated she was an extremely beautiful woman, and beautiful woman like Neda are…
