It seems like every time the news is on, one of the headlines is about a police shooting. Media coverage can go on for days, weeks even sometimes years covering these kinds of cases; however, most of the media’s coverage is based on the victim and their backstory. What seems to be left out of the news report is how the officer is handled by his own department following the devastating event. In this case regarding Detective Casey, it is as simple as his department failing him, in their lack of communication and empathy.…

The NIBRS does appear to be the most comprehensive set of statistics regarding crime, as it gathers information about the entirety of a crime, including perpetrator and victim. However, as Fagin states in the textbook, the NIBRS currently only accounts for roughly sixteen percent of crime statistics collected by the Uniform Crime Report. This is primarily due to the fact that there is no mandate for agencies at any level of law enforcement to report to the NIBRS. Eventually, that number will probably rise, but, we all know how fast policy changes are implemented; it is usually a painfully slow process. Additionally, you provide an excellent reason as to why the changeover is an incredibly slow process; cost. Enforcement officials…

The 1033 program was enacted in 1996 under the direction of former President Bill Clinton, allowing excess equipment originally purchased for the military to be transferred to state and local law enforcement agencies at no cost (GovTrack, 1996). The equipment is stated as being surplus, moreover, several notations are made on the Defense Logistics Agency’s website advising the equipment was not purchased for the sole purposes of providing it to law enforcement (n.d.). The equipment that has been deemed surplus range from first aid kits to helicopters, each being made available to law enforcement agencies that wish to apply for them.…

During the 19th century, Benjamin Disraeli, a British politician made a statement that still has significant resonance today: “There are three kinds of lies – lies, damned lies, and statistics” (as cited in Ball, 2004). Disraeli’s statement is merely a simple explanation of how the media sensationalize data, especially crime data, when reporting or publishing news items to the public. In that regard, reporters and journalist on many occasions take liberties in spicing data and news items up just to garnish some increased attention from the readers or the listeners. In a broader sense, media reporting may not accurately reflect facts since reporters and journalists has the ability to manipulate figures to say whatever they want them to.…

Although there are a few discrepancies with the police report and video surveillance one must apprehend that discrepancies are to be expected. According to Changing minds studies “if there is a perceived threat it will lead to fear and fear will lead to stress” ( 3). During the hours of Sandy Hook a cloud of fear and panic was spread throughout the scene. Many feared for the safety of others, as well as themselves. Shots were fired multiple times, which only elevated the pandemonium unfolding on the scene. It is only expected for stress to foster in the police and victims on the school grounds. “Who is the man that would risk his neck for his brother man?” Many have heard these lyrics for over 30 years from the theme song of a very well-known African American detective movie. The answer is Shaft, John Shaft to be exact. The 2000 version starring Samuel L. Jackson proved to be just as good as the first. Although, this Shaft happened to be the nephew of the original one, played by Richard Roundtree, Samuel L. Jackson did not disappoint. Shaft showed even more cleverness, wittiness and street smarts as he made it his quest to solve his latest case. John Shaft proves that he takes no mess and will go out of his way to bring justice to the ones who deserve it. Shaft had grown up in the inner city and learned the ins and outs of his town and it helped him succeed as a detective. Shaft does it all from handling local drug dealers who want to corrupt kids to arresting a racist male who killed another and almost got away with it. He’s well-known in his town and everybody knows he doesn’t take any mess from anybody.…
