A Systematic Literature Review:
New, Innovative and Creative Ways of Wellness Management, Regarding Employee and Organisational Wellness. Abstract
­­­­Objectives: To identify what new, innovative and creative ways of wellness management can be derived about employee and organisational wellness considering the previous research that has been done. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using the Economics and management sciences database. The search was limited to academic articles and journals that were published from the year 2000 to 2013. However the secondary articles that were found were published earlier. From these selected articles, the new, innovative and creative ways of wellness management regarding both employee and organisational wellness were identified and recorded. Results: There are various ways of wellness management; wellness interventions and models, wellness programs, and work-site health promotion. Organisations are becoming innovative and thinking creatively when it comes to managing the health and well-being of their employees as they realize the benefits from employee wellness. Conclusions: The results show that there are various ways for wellness management, however, there is still little research on the effectiveness of wellness interventions as well as programs and therefore more research on this would need to be conducted. 1. Introduction
Wellness is the quality of being healthy in both body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort (“wellness”, n.d.). Wellness has to do with an individual’s physical and psychological wellbeing and stress management is a method of gaining wellness as stress is a challenge and problem because it affects every aspect of wellness. Mckinley Health Center (2011, P. 1) states that “wellness is a state of optimal well-being that is orientated toward maximizing an individual’s potential”. Therefore it can be assumed that it is important for management to value an individual’s whole being. “Wellness is a proactive and preventive approach that is designed to provide optimum levels of health, emotional and social functioning” (Thehrhub, 2013, p. 1). Organisations use different approaches to impact on the wellness of their employees, they can use organisational wellness programmes or employee wellness programmes. An employee wellness programme “helps employees take an active role in being responsible for their own health and well-being” (Thehrhub, 2013, p. 1). It helps employees make smart decisions and healthy choices that can result in reduced health care costs, increased vitality and diminished absenteeism. Employee benefits from wellness programs comprise “increases in physical health” including reductions in “body fat and weight, decreases in heart rate, and blood pressure as well as improved cardiovascular health, life style and emotional well-being” (Voit, 2000, p. 284). Furthermore workers can experience “increased job satisfaction, decreased absenteeism, increased productivity, morale and commitment to the company” (Voit, 2000, p. 284). Organisational wellness programmes “boost productivity, increase employee health and wellness, reduce on-the-job stress and cut health-care costs” as well as “improve morale, increase job satisfaction, and lower employee turnover, while reducing disability and absenteeism” (Thehrhub, 2013, p. 1).
