Executive Summary

The production division at New Heritage Doll Company is considering between two business proposals to recommend at the firm’s upcoming capital budget meeting in October. In order to prioritize between the two projects, we needed to analyze both companies, quantitatively and qualitatively, to determine which proposal better suits NHDC’s goals.
Using a qualitative analysis, we analyzed both Match My Doll clothing line and compared it to the Design Your Own Doll proposal. We found, after comparing the strengths and weaknesses of both proposals, that MMDC’s business case is more compelling.
We then analyzed the financial aspect of both projects using the financial information given in the exhibit. In order to complete this analysis we began with a profitability analysis. First we computed the NPV, IRR and the profitability index in order to determine which of the projects would be more profitable. We found that although DYOD’s NPV was slightly higher, MMDC’s ratio’s seemed more compelling. We then moved on to a risk analysis, in order to compare the riskiness of the two projects. We found that not only is MMDC’s risk lower than that of DYOD, but its payback period was approximately 30% lower as well.
Based on these analyses, we recommend that the company should choose the Match My Doll Clothing line

The results of the analysis lend favourably towards accepting the investment project. First it is important to note that based on the after tax cost of borrowing and a risk premium of 3.75%, a discount rate of 8.89% was deemed appropriate for the project. The majority of the investment indicators used to value the project use discounted cash flows to determine the investment’s profitability. This technique allows for comparison amongst different investment opportunities available, as it provides the total return that is expected to be achieved over the project’s horizon in current dollar terms.…

    2. Some of the most important factors in this decision facing Mattel is to first realize what consumers in the United States are looking for in a product and what consumers internationally are looking for in a product. Next Mattel needs to realize that they produced one of the most famous dolls around the world known as the Barbie doll, that was a big hit and every young girl had to have one. Mattel needs to take this into consideration when making their decisions so Barbie dolls aren’t being recalled next and leaving consumers even more unhappy with their company. Another important factor is social responsibly, Mattel’s focus is on children and they also need to keep this important factor in mind when making any type of decision regarding what they are going to do in the future.…

The Warehouse Facility Consolidation project is aim to improve the NH’s warehouse facilities and can save the company’s operating costs as well as increase the shipping speed. This project is in retail division with an NPV of 2.29, an IRR of 13.56%, and a payback period of 8.23 years and a payback index of 0.31. Also, this project was considered as a medium risk project with 9.25% discount rate. Expansion of Mail-order Catalog Business to Asia is a retail division project, it is considering expanding its mail-order to the Asian market. Although there two possibilities that might happen, succeed or fail, it viewed as a low risk project with very low lifetime project costs which is only 2.73 million. It had an IRR of 19.77%, a discount rate of 8.46%, and a payback period is more than 10 years and the profitability index of this project is 2.85. I choose this project is because the Asian market is a very big market, since the project is low risk and the cost of this project is very low, we think it is worth to try, because if this project is succeed, the company will earn more profit. The last project we selected for this year is Retail Store Expansion in Northeast. The NPV of this project is 5.34 and it had an IRR of 37.45%, a discount rate of 10.04% and a payback period is 5.33 years. We suggested…

The Lane Bryant Corporation attempts to attract the full-figured, plus-size woman but seems to fall short with the current advertising practices. Through these shortcomings, the need for improvement prevails. In order to determine which of the two projects create more value, we must calculate NPV based on the assumptions relevant to the decision. The table below shows the NPV for the two product lines given discount rates of 7.7% (low risk), 8.4% (medium risk), and 9.0% (high risk). The Match My Doll Clothing line is currently rated as a medium risk project with 8.4% cost of capital. Given Emily’s knowledge of the industry we may be able to accept this; however, the firm should also consider whether children’s clothing lies within their core competencies and how different the market is from their current market for dolls. These factors could raise the risk rating to high. The Design your Doll project most likely falls into the high risk category due to the long payback period, new manufacturing processes, and reliance on flawless execution through a new web interface; however, the risk is potentially mitigated to the medium level due to the moderate fixed costs and the fact that it plays to the company’s key strength – creating a unique experience for consumers. Calculations for both projects include the terminal value assuming a 3% rate of perpetual growth, in line with the growth projections for US retail sales of dolls, and the growth of the US economy in general.…
