Nerds and Geeks in Our Society
Nerds and Geeks in Our Society

Being called a nerd or a geek isn’t a nice thing to some. To me, it’s a compliment but, it can become hurtful when said in the wrong way. When you hear a “cool” person call you that, you’ll feel that your self-esteem has been crushed. In fact, nerds and geeks have been shunned by so-called “cool crowds” ever since the dawn of school fractions (some notable school fractions are: the populars, the jocks, the cheerleaders, and the nerd/geeks/brainiacs). Due to these fractions, more and more people are being insulted with the words “nerd” and “geek.” But why insult them? They’re the ones who enhance the computers and cellphones we use today. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the technology we seem to can never live without. So what exactly about them made society (or at least the teen part) think they’re “uncool”?

Nerds and geeks are practically the same thing. It’s just that, people these days tend to use these words not knowing what they really mean. According to our good ol’ friend Merriam Webster, a nerd/geek is an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially: one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits .

We’ve all, at least once, tried so hard to study just to pass a test, we’ve all tried to fit in, we all use computers in our daily living, and we’ve all, at least once, been rejected by the “cool crowd.” In short, we’ve all come to the point of our lives where we, too, were counted as nerds and/or geeks by society. But that, my friend, doesn’t make us uncool. In fact, being uncool doesn’t exist. We are all unique and “cool” in our own special way, even the “nerds” and “geeks” you find here and there.

So if you meet a nerd or a geek, whether he’s playing some video game or fixing something in his computer, don’t shun him/her. Instead befriend and accept the person for who he/she is. Remember, even you were a nerd/geek at some point in your life. So if you shun that person, it’s

Writer, Leonid Fridman, in his composition, “America needs its Nerds”, declares that the American connotations for “nerd” and “geek” are offensive and should not be used to describe those people who are dedicated to learning. Fridman’s purpose is to convince all of those nerds and geeks to stop being ashamed and accept themselves for who they are. He adopts a sincere, but informative tone to appeal to his audience’s emotions and to inform them of specific facts that he feels his readers should be acquainted with.…

As he checked the cracked face of his iPhone for the twentieth time in as few minutes, he read: 9:58PM. "Just two more minutes." He thought. "Then I can kick these freeloaders out." He didn't REALLY think of his customers as freeloaders. In fact, it was his customers that made his shop, "Atomic Landing" so great. The sense of community where everyone felt free to do as they wanted and be themselves had made it a hub for nerds of all intensities. Of course, it was only the ones that were the largest nerds that hung out right until close, forcing him to get a bit more gruff than the normally laid-back 6' 2" male normally was.…

Freaks and Geeks breaks all high school television show stereotypes and is one of the most accurate portrayal of high school in television. The actors in the show are around high school age and the freshmen really look like freshmen. The show follows the the freaks and the geeks at the high school instead of the popular kids and the jocks. Even though the show is categorized as a comedy, there are many aspects that are serious. There are scenes that really stick with viewers and hit close to home. When a special needs boy, Eli, is being made fun of, one of the main “freaks,” Lindsey, asks him to the dance and stands up for him. Later in the episode, Lindsey catches some boys making fun of Eli and tells him that the boys are laughing at him because he is “retarded” and hearing this upsets Eli and he runs off the bleachers and breaks his arm. It is one of those scenes that is not seen in many television shows because it is so hard to watch. The show addresses the topic of bullying of the “geeks” through serious scenes and comedy scenes such as when the “geeks” attack their biggest bully, Allan. Bullying happens in every school and many people do not know about it. Freaks and Geeks gives viewers an inside look of the issues many high schoolers face and recreate them in a serious or comical…

Cool kids supposedly have great lives and are cool for most of their lives. The nerds are shunned by their classmates and prefer to focus on their studies. You may choose being cool after hearing about their lives in school but later on the nerd goes to a good college while the cool guy flips burgers at a fast-food restaurant. After college the nerd gets a good job which he uses to get a car, and changes his normal attire into suits and no longer wears glasses. The nerd finally has a good life because he worked hard and the no longer cool slacker is stuck having the job at the fast-food place. I would much rather be a nerd half my life and successful the rest than be popular and then end up failing at life…

How do the "mook" and "midriff" stereotypes relate to the corporate interests of the media outlets that perpetuate them (in other words, why these particular stereotypes and not some other stereotype)?…

In high school being a nerd is a fine line between being accepted and becoming a rejected. As you enter the school you will see a few students sitting on benches. Each of these benches will have one student, each with their head buried in a text book or a video game. This group of people may appear to be a clique but they do not socialize with each other. Giving the students who sit in this area the label “loners” or “socially awkward”. If this doesn’t seem like your kind of crowd, maybe the more social nerds will be the perfect fit. The social nerds ether have their own small group of friends or are extremely popular. If becoming popular is your goal in high school it will be in your best interest to be a student who participates in sports.…

When it comes to school, I guess you could say that my mom was a bit of a nerd. She was extremely smart and exceeded in every class. She went to a Catholic school until fourth grade. She said, about this school, “Not much happened here, I was placed in Reading and Math groups by myself, and no, I was never hit with rulers over the knuckles by the nuns, if you were wondering.” In middle school, she was placed in an advanced class and by the time she left she was finished with all her required high school math classes. She was also inducted into the National Junior Honor Society where she held the office of Secretary. In high school, since she was a big nerd, she took college level math courses and AP in all other classes. She also played…

In the beginning of his essay, Friedman defines “geek” to catch the reader’s attention and offend them, so that they will take action. He cites the Webster’s New World Dictionary defining “geek” as a street performer who shocks the public by biting off the heads of live chickens.” The archaic term was used derogatorily about geeks. Today, intellectuals would be offended by this definition, and it would ultimately catch their attention. He intends that intellectuals, when learning this fact, will become offended, read the article, and then take action to resolve the injustice.…

The term is a loanword from the Japanese language. In English, it is usually used to refer to an obsessive fan of anime/manga and/or Japanese culture generally, and to a lesser extent Japanese video games. It is sometimes used without the Japanese association with "geek" and "otaku" being exchangeable, indicating a person who is intelligent and obsessive about a subject, but not necessarily to the point of social ineptness.…
