Nepal earthquake
The April 2015 Nepal earthquake (also known as the Gorkha earthquake)[6][9] killed more than 8,800 people and injured more than 23,000. It occurred at 11:56 NST on 25 April, with a magnitude of 7.8Mw[1] or 8.1Ms[2] and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of IX (Violent). Its epicenter was east of the district of Lamjung, and its hypocenter was at a depth of approximately 15 km (9.3 mi).[1] It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake.[10][11][12]
The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19,[13] making April 25, 2015 the deadliest day on the mountain in history.[14] The earthquake triggered another huge avalanche in the Langtang valley, where 250 people were reported missing.[15][16]
Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless with entire villages flattened,[15][17][18] across many districts of the country. Centuries-old buildings were destroyed at UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, including some at the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Squar, the Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the Changu Narayan Temple and the SwayambhunathStupa. Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake, particularly because of its geology, urbanization, and architecture.[19][20]
Continued aftershocks occurred throughout Nepal within 15–20 minute intervals, with one shock reaching a magnitude of 6.7 on 26 April at 12:54:08 NST.[5] The country also had a continued risk of landslides.[21]
A major aftershock occurred on 12 May 2015 at 12:51 NST with a moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.3.[22] The epicenter was near the Chinese border between the capital of Kathmandu and Mt. Everest.[23] More than 200 people were killed and more than 2,500 were injured by this aftershock.[24] v

On September 17th, 2015 a powerful earthquake that shook Chile. It was said to have a magnitude of 8.5, killing about 5 people, injuring many, and destroying hundreds of homes, businesses, and land mass. Along with the damage came the after mass of power loss, damage, and flooding along with tsunamis. There were 12 aftershocks that could be felt 145 miles away from the originating site. Chile is known to have earthquakes, but none have compared to this one. Since 1973, Chile has had approximately 12 with magnitudes of 7.0 and above. So this should not have come to a shock to the residents both near and far. Millions of people evacuated the area in a short period…

This killed 19 expedition members at the Everest Base Camp. With this in mind, the expectation should be for a slow season on Everest, but according to Dave Roberts, “The death of the 16 sherpas didn't slow things down.” (Will Everest’s Climbing Circus Slow Down After Disasters?). The earthquake shook up the mountain, just because nothing has fallen and killed, doesn't mean it won’t.…

On January 12, 2010, a Mw7.0 earthquake struck the Port-au-Prince region of Haiti (Figure A), killing more than 200,000 people, leaving more than 1.5 million homeless, and destroying most governmental, technical, and educational infrastructure throughout this region of 3 million people. It was also strongly felt in the Dominican Republic but caused no damage there because of the significant distance between major urban centers and the epicenter. The event caused an estimated $8 billion in damages in Haiti, ~120% of the country's GDP. No other earthquake of such moderate magnitude has ever caused so many causalities and such extensive damage. This was because the earthquake occurred in a heavily populated region of a very poor country with substandard…

It had hit off Chiapas' Pacific coast, close the Guatemalan border, with a strong magnitude of 8.1. “Magnitude measures an earthquake's strength on a scale of 1 to 10.” This earthequake’s force was equal to Mexico's strongest earthquake about 100 years ago.” But it was slightly stronger than the 1985 earthquake.” The U.S. Geological Survey had said.” This group studies earthquakes for the United States government.” The strongest point of the earthquake was in a seismic plate hotspot in the Pacific Ocean where one tectonic plate dives down under one another. These hotspots have caused some of the largest earthquakes in history. One of these was the 2011 Fukushima disaster that had happeed in Japan. Another was the 2004 Sumatra earthquake that caused a deadly tsunami. The area has seen at least six other earthquakes of large magnitude 7.0 or greater since the 1900…

The earthquake that shook Haiti happened on January 12, it had a magnitude of 7.0, killed about 230,000 people and injured about 300,000 people. It lasted about 35 seconds, it was one of the strongest temblor to hit Haiti in more than 200 years. What caused the earthquake to happen was that the North American and Caribbean plates moved past each other in an east-west direction causing it to release a lot of built up energy over the years. Even though it wasn’t the biggest earthquake to happen in that area, it had a much higher amount of fatalities because it hit a very populated region. The reason it was so devastating because of how many people were affected by it, the country has a very poor economy and their buildings are not built for earthquake resistance, so of course…

Mother Nature cannot take all the blame of this disaster. People are to be blamed too. Haiti was a poor country before the quake had happened. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world because of its restrictions on economic liberty. Not only is it poor, but it is also considered one of the most corrupted countries too. “Haiti is ranked 177 out of 179 countries in the 2007 Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index” (Haiti’s Avoidable Death Toll). Crimes and lawlessness are rampant in Haiti. “The extreme poverty in the region and the lack of proper education regarding its dangerous seismic past caused the Haitian people significant issues with regard to seismic…
