Need to Know and Dear Diary
September 1933
Dear diary, Today was my first day back at school. I’ve been looking forward to the start of school for ages, really glad it’s finally started. It was my first day back, it wasn’t bad for a start but then it got worst. Well you see my new teacher Miss Caroline Fisher has just moved into our school; I don’t think she likes me. Today she asked the whole class ‘doesn’t everyone know how to read or write? ’I said to her that I didn’t really learn how to read or write I just read the daily papers and she also told me that I should stop reading and writing because I’m back at school now. It feels like she was trying to tease me and make me embarrass myself. So now I have to find out what her game is with me? I thought that everything would be new since it’s a new term and a new start, but the first day of school just felt like a normal day at school. At break I saw Walter in the playground; I had to go up to him. I was so embarrassed because of him but Jem stopped me before I could get there and then told Walter to come and sit with us at lunch. I was so furious, but I stilled put up with him. His table manners were so disgusting I couldn’t believe it, it’s like he hasn’t eaten in forever. But I had to tell him about his manners; it was the right thing to do. Then Calpurnia punished me for criticizing Walter’s manners, but I really thought that he should know.
When I got home I told my father everything. He really had to know; also I thought that once he has heard it I wouldn’t have to go back to school again. But it didn’t work. Instead he gave me good advice. He said you need to know the person before trying to do something to them, really become them and think of the position they are in. Maybe I should get to know Miss Caroline Fisher a little bit better before I start investigating her or find out what her game with me is. I guess that my father’s advice always makes me think of a new way for me to look at people and understand them. I

Charlotte Johnston been sitting at a black top table surrounded by a group of chatty students her own age. And hadn't been paying much attention to what the teacher was saying, because everything zoned out, besides appearances and movements. Mr. Hube was wearing a bright purple sweater with tan khakis, and was extra fidgety. Something got him all hot and bothered, and it was obvious. His pale blue eyes glanced the room, and the pauses, he worried his lower lip, driving Charlotte crazy, that his outfit choice was bold for a teacher and that he appeared nervous to speak in front of his own class.…

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Growing up, I always wanted to help my father. I wanted to get tools for him and rattle off facts, even when we both knew they were wrong. My drive to help people never lessened as I grew up, though it did evolve. My dad would watch me be on the phone for hours on end, listening to people’s problems, rarely speaking myself. Dad would always say, “You’re wise beyond your years, Loobie,” and I would chuckle, believing him wholeheartedly. Being the daughter of an alcoholic, I had my own troubles, but I ignored them for I was under the impression that I was wise and wise meant you could handle anything thrown at you. I felt as if I was fine and just wanted to listen to other people’s troubles, distracting me from my own and always more manageable. My father let me be, because I was happy doing what I loved: helping people.…

I watched nervously as the train pulled into the station in Maycomb. I wasn’t supposed to be there. I was not supposed to be there. I was supposed to be in Meridian. I just couldn’t stand it! They never paid attention. They’re better off without me. As I crept down the street, I wondered idly what Scout and Jem would think. They might think I lied to them! I never lie to hem. Well, there was that one time…..but that doesn’t count! I kicked at the dusty road and twisted the dirty edge of my abrasive shirt. As I inched closer to the Finch house, I remembered that they could send me back on the train still tonight. I couldn’t let that happen! I decided that I had better hide. I peeked into the windows and found everyone in the den. Breathing…

The day started off as any normal day. My mother woke me up and said “we must go.” Her voice sounded very urgent for what I thought was just a trip to the grocery store. My mom laid my outfit on my bed and packed by book bag; that’s when I figured out that I was starting school. I wasn’t entirely oblivious to the fact that I was going to familiarize myself with a completely different environment, but I just thought I had a little more time to prepare. Well, it turns out that I was wrong. You see, I wasn’t your average pre-schooler who was nervous about making friends. I was the immigrant child who had never spoken a word of English.…

Most first graders are always excited to go to school on their first day to meet their old friends and make new ones, to start with a clean slate and to strive to be better than the previous year. I felt like an outsider, not being able to feel the same way out of fear. On my first day of first grade, I woke up at 8 in the morning to an upset stomach of fear. I did not want to go to school. I did not want to leave my mom. I did not want other children judging me at school. “You should be excited to go to school today. It’s your first day! Don’t worry at all, you’ll be fine,” said my mother in an encouraging tone. As I got ready for school, I tired but failed to ignore the butterflies and the lump in my throat as I worried about how I would make it through the entire day of school. I was strangled by thoughts like: Which one of my friends will I run into first? Will my teachers like me? What if I’m late to class and become that girl that walked in late on the first day? I walked to my bus holding my mother’s hand and looking down at the floor. I saw the large yellow bus and felt this sudden rush of tears rolling down my face while my mother tried to force me onto the bus. Once I got on the bus, the older children looked like monsters who were about to attack me so I quietly sat in a seat and looked out the window for…

Second of all I would like to acknowledge, yes I do mess up rather often, but it really isn’t all my fault, and third and final dilemma, I have basically given up. I am not the best student in the building and I know you have many, many other students that you are trying to prevent from not messing up, and I feel sometimes I am selfish about it, and I do know you do things sometimes that seem tough to handle but in all honesty, you do it out of love for all of the students, not just one, it’s for the best interest, not just a certain few, I am also sorry for making this such a big deal, but it really does feel like she is targeting me, no matter what you or anyone else say, no one sees what really goes on inside that classroom, when she says things to me that makes me feel less than I really am.…
