Need for Responsible Media
India’s mass media sector is dynamic, growing, and has a huge audience. Mass media can be a force for social change. Media coverage of HIV/AIDS in India, however, has been erratic in quality. Sensationalism can contribute to stigmatization and discrimination, the privacy of victims is often not respected, fact checking is frequently lacking, and the media’s role in public education is unclear and inconsistent.
The World Bank Institute (WBI) has partnered with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) World Service Trust in a capacity building program to put socially responsible communication into schools of communication and journalism. HIV/AIDS and other health issues are topics for applied exercises. WBI’s goal for the program was to test an innovative solution that has the potential to go to scale in India and elsewhere, and also be cost effective.
Since the media’s role in public education is unclear and inconsistent...WBI has partnered with the BBC in a capacity building program to put socially responsible communication into schools of communication and journalism.
The program developed curricula on Socially Responsible Communication for regular course offerings in three of the leading schools of communication in India: The course is mandatory in two schools and elective in the third. The first round of training prepared 120 students with the skills and attitudes they need to cover HIV/AIDS, health, and other social issues in their media and communications work.
At present a part of media acts as paid media. The TV channels, newspapers are owned by powerful politicians and they use the media for influencing the thinking of people to their advantage. While this cannot be avoided totally an attempt can be made by responsible media not exaggerate negative happening and blow trumpet again and again creating sensation among the younger generation. That results in further problems.

    In today’s world, the media has become a necessity just like food, clothing, and shelter. The media was ideally designed to be impartial and unbiased – to provide information, news, and knowledge that is objective and socially constructive. Unfortunately, in recent times, because of its money making approach the media has adopted a biased approach that is benefitting politicians and the corporate leaders. Sadly, the media is known to be resorting to “Paid News” – news that is published or broadcasted to benefit a certain class of people who have huge economic power and who wield that economic power to buy “The News” in their favor. The viewer’s/readers of such “Paid News” are at such a loss with this information that lacks integrity and they can be easily misled. Actually the readers/viewers are deceived in to believing “Paid News” which is indeed misrepresentation of the truth..     Recent dramatic developments in all areas of human endeavour have also increasingly impacted various spheres of higher education in India. Besides, advancement in communication profession, strides in higher studies in mass communication have also witnessed profuse transformation in the course contents. The University Grants Commission, therefore, did well in constituting a Curriculum Development Committee in Mass Communication to recast various mass communication programmes for our Universities. Since gone for good is the era of journalism which was mainly crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s, journalism is now a part of larger discipline of mass communication. For, other areas of mass communication, such as radio, television, advertising, public relations, satellite communication and internet have taken over the entire of gamut of human communication. The Curriculum Development Committee (CDC) consisting of senior professors of mass communication from various Universities in its several sittings has finalised mass communication syllabi for B.A. (Hons.), M.A. and Bridge courses. While preparing the course content, the CDC also took note of the UGC workshops organized earlier in different parts of the country for this purpose. However, increased stress has been laid on new communication technology for obvious reasons. In the course content prepared by CDC, every effort has been made to update and upgrade all the present and emerging areas of mass communication. The CDC craves the indulgence of the departments of mass communication and professionals for any lapses. This document is a model curriculum and the departments can adapt it according to their requirements and local conditions. The CDC is indeed highly gratified to the UGC and, particularly, its chairman, the chief moving force, Dr. Hari Gautam, in its sustained help in completing this task which has been accomplished in a rather record brief period.
