Ncee in the Philippines

A paradigm shift must take place recognizing that in order to be truly globally competitive, we must have a globally competent educational infrastructure; The need to be more globally competitive becomes even more dire when we take into light the 2012 Global Competitiveness Report published by the World Economic Forum. In it, 144 countries are evaluated and ranked based on their Global Competitiveness Index determined by pillar indices like market efficiency, technological readiness, and ofcourse Higher Education and Training. Overall The Philippines ranks 65th; 10 places higher than last year., Although the Philippines has improved its overall ranking, it still falls behind its neighbors. Thailand is 38 and Indonesia is 50. Yes it has increased, but we are the least competitive in the ASEAN 5. So how does this relate to the implementation of the NCEE? You see, the above pillars are further subdivided into various components. For example, under Higher Education and Training is Quality of Math and Science Education where Philippines ranks 98th. Under Health and Primary Education, on the criterion of Quality of Primary Education, the Philippines is number 86. The positive contributors to our ranking include, Gross national savings, 47; Domestic market size, 29; and one of the highest being available airline seats (insert humor) we rank 26. Nowhere in any of the subdivided indices will you see our educational infrastructure helping our overall rank, infact its pulling us down. Clearly, a complete overhaul of our educational infrastructure is necessary and the implementation of the NCEE, hand in hand with the k12 system of education not only gives us this opportunity to be more globally competitive, it almost certainly guarantees it.
