CHAPTER NO 1:

NATURE OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

MEANING OF PSYCHOLOGY The word “psychology” comes form the Greek word (Psyche mean Soul, Logos mean Science), thus the meaning of Psychology is the science of soul. EDUCATION AND PSYCHOLOGY Education in the narrow sense is the modification of behaviour of children in a controlled environment. To shape the behaviour of the subject and bring some positive or negative changes, it is necessary to study the science of behaviour. The developmental stages and characteristics of children are very essential factors from which the teacher must aware in order to be a successful teacher. If the teacher has no knowledge of children psychology, how can we expect from him that he would succeed in bringing about the desirable changes in children? DEFINITION OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY; Educational psychology is the application of psychological findings in the field of education. Educational psychology is the systematic study of the development of the individual within the educational settings. It helps the teacher to understand the students and enhance their skills. Educational psychology is an applied discipline which combines the two different fields of education and psychology. It is the scientific study of human behaviour by which it can be understood, predicted and directed by education to achieve goals of life. Some famous definitions of educational psychology are given below. SKINNER ‘Educational psychology is that branch of psychology which deals with teaching and learning.’ CROW & CROW ‘Educational psychology describes and explains the learning experiences of an individual from birth through old age.’ PEEL ‘Educational psychology is the science of education.’

Because psychology deals with human behavior, of how a person acts and reacts under different situations, consciously or unconsciously, mentally, physiologically, physically, overtly, or covertly. Education depends deeply upon psychology because the kind and amount of education that the learner acquires in conditioned by his psychological traits such as general mental ability, aptitudes, temperament, interest, effort-making capacity, physical condition, etc. It was said that the principles of education are principally based upon the facts and principles of psychology. Many important educational principles are based on different schools or system of psychology. Some of them are the following: Structuralism – according to Wudnt & Titchener. “Experience or mental states are made of sensation, images or ideas and feelings.” In other words, All consciousness of facts and phenomena of experiences are based upon the operation of the brain or the nervous system. Functionalism – functionalist are interested in how an organism makes adjustment to its environment, that is, either it changes or makes adaptation to it. Behaviorism – this theory believes that a stimulus, physical or otherwise, creates a response. Behavior is considered the result of various responses to stimulation and should be controlled or directed by modifying either the stimulus or the response without regard to consciousness.
