Nature-Nurture In Public Schools

Nature – Nurture is a debate in Psychology that can be seen everywhere, today. Going through public schooling, you see the results of the nature-nurture issue all too much and with both of my parents working in the public school system, I see the results even more in students they work with. I can think of so many young people off the top of my head that are victims of not enough nurturing. A lot of students today act out, misbehave and cry out for attention because they don’t get the nurturing they deserve at home. There are also students who may never discover their true potential because they miss out on the nurturing that most people receive. There is a family in my church who took in five foster children who were brothers and sisters. These kids started riding the bus to church and it was very clear that they had missed out on a great deal of nurturing in their lives. After time went on, they were put in the foster system and this family in our church decided to take all five of the kids in and eventually adopted them. With a little nurturing, these children transformed. Their appearance, manners, grades and so many other things improved. The only thing these children were missing was nurturing in their home.
My youth pastor and his wife brought home a foster child when she was only two days old. She will turn two in October and they have just got the news that parental rights have been terminated and they can now start the adoption process. Meena, the foster child, is such a happy and intelligent little girl and it’s because she has been exposed to so many learning opportunities and a lot of social interaction. I believe if she had been with her biological parents for these first two years of her life that she would not have all of the skills and knowledge that she has
