Natural Disasters in Indiana
Natural Disasters in Indiana
The natural disasters that occur in Indiana are:
Tornadoes
In order to protect yourself if a tornado occurs you go a small room or hallway. Make sure that there are no videos in the room and wear sturdy shoes. If you are outside don’t hide under anything just stay low and never try to outrun the tornado.

Floods
To prepare for a flood you should move all outdoor furniture inside and if you have a two story house keep the furniture on the second floor. Unplug all electrical equipment but make sure that you aren’t wet or standing in water.

Thunderstorms & Lightning
During storms go inside if you can but if you are outside and you see lightning never hide under anything. Many people think that they should hide under trees but that is the worse place to hide and you are more likely to get struck by lightning that way.

A good plan would be to have an emergency kit and water, like for any natural disaster plan. The kit would include first aid, important medications, batteries, etc. Know your surroundings and know if your home is in danger of flooding. If you are outside during the flood, know not to walk or drive through the water. When flooding is happening, you should pay attention to any news warnings and weather advisories on the TV or your phone, so you can know if you need to evacuate and seek…

Many avalanches are small slides of dry powdery snow that move as a formless mass. These "sluffs" account for a tiny fraction of the death and destruction wrought by their bigger, more organized cousins. Disastrous avalanches occur when massive slabs of snow break loose from a mountainside and shatter like broken glass as they race downhill. These moving masses can reach speeds of 80 miles (130 kilometers) per hour within about five seconds. Victims caught in these events seldom escape. Avalanches are most common during and in the 24 hours right after a storm that dumps 12 inches (30 centimeters) or more of fresh snow. The quick pileup overloads the underlying snowpack, which causes a weak layer beneath the slab to fracture. The layers are an archive of winter weather: Big dumps, drought, rain, a hard freeze, and more snow. How the layers bond often determines how easily one will weaken and cause a slide.…
