Natural Childbirth After Laryngectomy
Natural childbirth after a complete laryngectomy is rare because of two reasons. The first being that it removes the vocal folds which permit a person to hold their breath. During childbirth the mother has an urge to hold her breath and push, since she cannot hold her breath due to the complete laryngectomy she therefor can not push properly. During childbirth a mother is to synchronize her breathing with the contractions, if she has trouble breathing out she will be unable to. The second reason would be because the muscles of forced expiration cannot contract the abdominal muscles; which is directly involved in childbirth.
