Ilana Inoyatova due November 18, 2014 DBQ Essay History Nationalism in the Nineteenth Century Nationalism was the most powerful force in the 1800s. It came to the force with the French Revolution of 1789. It then contributed to the unification of Italy and Germany in the nineteenth century. At the same time, ethnic unrest threatened to topple the Ottoman and the Austro-Hungarian empires, Nationalism also contributed to the outbreak of wars. These included the Franco-Prussian War and World War I. Nationalism played a huge role in the 1800s, it united people into nation states. Count Cavour, who was named prime minister of Piedmont Sardinia in 1852, he provided the brains of Italian unification. Cavour brought unification to Italy, he wished to free Italy from foreign rule, and wanted to drive out all foreign people. Not because he wanted to see Italy as a powerful and glorious country, but because he wanted to elevate the Italians statues, and elevate Italian people in intelligence and moral development. This action that Cavour did to thrive and succeed is stated in document 3. Another form of unification that formed people into nation states is a man named Giuseppe Garibaldi. Giuseppe Garibaldi was the sword of Italian unification. He added the southern kingdom to Italy to form one United Kingdom. Garibaldi had a very famous speech that inspired the Italian people. He stated that whoever loves his country from their heart and not with his lips should only thrive to make his country better. He inspired the nation to love their country and he united Italy with his words and actions. This can be proven in document 4.
