Unit EconM1013 - MANAGEMENT

UNIT OUTLINE – AUTUMN TERM 2013

Aims and Objectives

The unit aims to give students a broad understanding of organisation theory and organisation behaviour. Students will be expected to understand key management theories and the historical background to those theories. They will also be expected to examine different management theories critically, understanding their deficiencies as well as their strengths.

The following subjects will be among those covered in this unit. A review of Organisation Theory and an introduction to Critical Management Theory The Nature of Organisations & Organisational Behaviour Organisation Structure and Design
Technology and environment Organisational Culture and National Culture The Individual in Organisations Groups in Organisations Power and Conflict Strategy and leadership

Unit Details

This unit is lectured by:
Dr Steve Lyne and Ms Judith Jordan

Lectures take place on Monday from 9.00 – 11.00, in the Chemistry Building: East Block: Lecture Theatre 1.

There are also 7 classes starting week 4, taken by Dr Chris Durugbo, Helen Ballard, Dr Mark Hall, Judith Jordan and Claire O’Neil

The course text is:
L Mullins, ‘Management and Organisational Behaviour’, Prentice Hall, 10th edition. It is important that you have a copy of this text.
Other reading is indicated on the Reading List.

Assessment Methods

The course is assessed by a group case study (25%), submitted on or before 27 January 2014 and an exam in May/June (75%).

There will also be work to be done (some to be submitted, at your class). This is formative work; it does not form part of your final assessment but it is vital for your learning.
