Nate's Cover Letter
Nate’s cover letter and resume function as a set based on the design choices he made in the name heading style for both documents. His summary on the top of the resume also is reminiscent of the last line in his opening paragraph for the cover letter, strongly showing that this is what he wants the reader to take away about his professional experiences. He provides his own social media information, showing he has cultivated these as part of his professional ethos. Concerning sections, Nate created an uncluttered design for his resume that allows for quick skimming using bolded headings that are larger than the subheadings, which makes it simple for the reader to grab a quick overview of the information he has provided and read what they consider most important. I appreciate the varying of verbs as it better explains the experience, and does not slip into the territory of being too generic. Lastly, the weight of his resume is given to the experience section, which fully takes up the right hand column. He mentions in his memo that this was an intentional decision, and as he wanted, it succeeds in drawing the reader’s eye. In his cover letter, Nate has a great balance between discussing his own experiences while connecting the to the expectations of a grant writing intern at FCE. Based on his …show more content…
His cover letter summarizes the totality of his resume and the direction he desires to head much more successfully than many other cover letters I have read. The reader has no trouble understanding this is the main thrust of his argument and his succinct thesis provides a takeaway for the reader. Also, the skills recalled in the conclusion hearkens back to the thesis, strengthening its hold in the reader’s mind. The confidence exuded here accentuates his professional ethos, showing that he knows he has the skills necessary for this

I am writing this letter regarding my request for funding to attend a business writing course at Florida International University. This course is only held once a year in our area and it will be on the 11 day of July ending on the 13 day of July 2013. The business writing course is the only course held of its kind and it is the most cost-effective professional development opportunity available to me this year. SAMANTHA PIERCE 14 Brattle Street Cambridge, MA 02138 (617) 495-3108 spierce@jd13.law.harvard.edu December 1, 2010 Miriam A. Nunberg Staff Attorney U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights 32 Old Slip, 26th Fl. New York, NY 10005-2500 Dear Ms. Nunberg: I am a first-year student at Harvard Law School and am writing to apply for a volunteer summer internship with the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights in New York City. I learned about your organization through Harvard Law School's public service database and through Harvard students who have interned at branches of the OCR in other cities. Interning at the OCR would allow me to continue my commitment to civil rights in education, and I feel confident that I could contribute substantively to the work of your office while strengthening the skills I’ll need for a career in education law. As a senior at Cornell University, I wrote an honors thesis on the politics of bilingual education in California and New York, focusing on strategies for protecting minority students’ language rights. Because my career goal is to work on language issues, and discrimination generally, in American education, I wrote my master’s thesis on language policy in Spanish schools in order to gain knowledge of how other countries handle these complex issues. This semester, I’ve gotten involved with Harvard Law School’s Advocates for Education, as well as the Child and Youth Advocates, organizations which have exposed me to the work lawyers can do to promote education rights. Additionally, joining the Latino Law Review has kept me updated on the issues facing minority students. My work with the Harvard Defenders has begun to give me experience in public interest litigation, and working at the OCR would allow me to gain experience advocating for the specific client populations I hope to assist in my career. Because of my familiarity with language issues and New York’s bilingual education policies,…
