Nasir Jones was born on September 14th, 1973 to Olu Dara and Anne Jones in Brooklyn, New York. Shortly after moved to the Queensbridge housing project – the setting for Nas’ street poetry (Hess). Some psychologists believe that traits and characteristics are transferred over from the parent to the offspring, and Nas is an example of this. His father was a travelling jazz musician who played the trumpet, guitar and also sang. His mother’s father and grandfather were also singers in Mississippi. When Nas was younger, he would visit his father in Harlem, New York and the two of them would explore their musical talents. By the age of four, Nas was able to play the trumpet and was also able to play around with guitars and drums (Hess). The artistic ability of Nas did not end with music.
