I. Hilton’s History and Growth
It all started in 1919, when Conrad Hilton bought his first hotel. Since then, they’ve led the industry with their innovative approach to products, amenities and service. Hilton is one of the largest hospitality companies in the world, and they’re growing faster than ever in 1927, Hilton opens its first hotel (the Waco Hilton) with cold running water and air-conditioning in the public rooms. During 1947, The Roosevelt Hilton in New York City becomes the first hotel in the world to install televisions in guest rooms. In the year of 1948, Hilton becomes the first hotel company to introduce a multi-hotel reservations system, which is the beginning of the modern day reservation system. In the period of 1950, Hilton creates its first special amenity for female travelers – a sewing kit and booklet with helpful names and telephone numbers. During 1957, Hilton offers its first brand-wide direct-dial telephone service. In the year of 1963, Hilton opens its first airport hotel (San Francisco Airport Hilton) and pioneers the airport hotel concept. Business travelers everywhere rejoice. In the period of 1973, Hilton develops the first centralized reservation service using computer technology, a breakthrough in customer service. In 1987, Hilton introduces its guest loyalty program, Hilton Honors. During 2008, Hilton Vancouver Washington makes history as the first hotel to be both Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Green Seal certified. In 2010, Less than five months after its October 21, 2010 opening at Hilton Short Hills: spa at Hilton operates in China, Thailand and the United States. And as of today, Hilton Hotels & Resorts stands as the stylish, forward thinking global leader of hospitality.

    In 1999, The Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide raised their cost by announcing their new aggressive frequent-guest program that was accompanied by a fifty million dollar advertising campaign. The head of Hilton HHonors program, Jeff Diskin, recognized their competition and realized Hilton would have to raise their costs to keep up with demand. Two entirely unrelated corporations controlled Hilton brand: Hilton Hotels Corporation (HHC) and Hilton International (HIC). At this point in time, Hilton was very well recognized, but was limited because of a varying product from property. In return, this challenged customer expectations due to such a variety of product offerings. Hilton’s customers needed a standard of what to expect no matter which division of Hilton properties they visited. Starwood represented more than 550 participating properties worldwide, and they were adding program features that might be too expensive for Hilton to match. Such as no blackout dates (no matter what day or season, reward points were always able to be redeemed), no capacity control (all unreserved rooms were available), paperless rewards (properties able to accept points for a stay) , and hotel reimbursement (since more dates were available with no blackouts, Starwood charged hotels 20%-100% more than competition.…
