CHAPTER 3

ASSESSMENT OF PRACTICUM PROGRAM

A. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED FROM THE EXPERIENCE

At the end of the on-the-job-training, I experienced many things and I leaned from it. I learned how to use and operate tally printer that was used in printing bills, statement of account, reading list and check list. I also learned on how to make adjustment entry for rebilling. I know the basic things in editing signature by using adobe photoshop. I gained knowledge in sorting and categorizing bill according to its Oebr number. I learned also on how to upload data from Psion to PC and how to upload data from PC to Psion. They taught us about the flow of their transactions and through this, we learned how to compute the bills of the consumer whether it is rebill and rebilled, what is their differences. And also the proper and timely reading of KWH meter consumption of all member-consumers as basis for the preparation of bills. We input the bills of the consumer on the database. I learned that on-the-job training is not just only a subject to be passed or a requirement to be completed but on-the-job training is an opportunity to show what skills, talents and techniques that the student learned from the school and also an opportunity to experience the life outside the campus. We have to responsible enough on the task given to us. You should accept your weaknesses. Time is very important. As early as you do your work, you finish it an earlier time that you can do such things by helping others. You should not be afraid to ask questions if you do not know what to do to avoid faultiness in your work.

B. MY EXPERIENCES WITH THE PEOPLE AROUND ME

At the first day of my on-the-job-training, I did not know how to react and I do not even know the people in the office. I was just quiet. Most of the employees there were jokers and they were so nice to the trainees like me so I felt happy and comfortable in the department I was assigned to. So, during my on-the-job training I experienced how to deal and interact with the people around me. All the employees in the office supervised us on the task that was assigned to us. It was very different when I was in school and I was in the real world because as I undergo training I learned many things that I cannot learn on the four corners of the room. The real world let me experience actual things to become a better worker or a better employee to the near future. Although I worked and interact with them for a short period of time, I learned a lot to them; the skills and knowledge that they shared with me that cannot be find on the books.

C. THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT DURING MY PRACTICUM

The most memorable event during my practicum is the time when there was a party. It was a Labor Day Celebration. Even though we were only a trainee, they don’t treat us like others. And as a trainee, we don’t feel uncomfortable as we socialized with them. We were very happy that time. I cherish the time when were having an OJT in FICELCO, and how I wish when were graduate (hopefully) we’ve get the chance to work in FICELCO, because it’s a wonderful thing to work with the people who treat us as if we were an employee there.

D. WHAT I CAN RECOMMEND FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE PRACTICUM PROGRAM

It is more efficient if we will take our practicum by one semester because in some cases it can affect the flow of schooling of a student. OJT have their preferred pre-requisite subjects that once not taken would give a big effect to the arrangement of the student’s subjects. The students must have a good company that would give them a good training ground and would enhance their knowledge and capabilities. The school must have the good coordination for some bigger companies that is very much significant to us as IM students. The school should provide more budgets given to the OJT supervisors to monitor the entire trainee.

E. MY ADVICE TO THOSE WHO WILL TAKE THEIR PRACTICUM TO THE NEAR FUTURE

The trainee should observe a proper attitude during practicum while working because it will also affect the work of other employees in the office. If you do not understand something or you do not know what to do you should ask for help to avoid faultiness. You should the one to take initiative if you want to learn something new. Always focus on the task given to you because they want you to experience things as if you were an employee in that company. Listen to the instructions given to you by your supervisor and accept your weaknesses and mistakes and learn from it.

Ivancevich (2010) notes that the most widely used method of training is on-the-job training. “It is estimated that more than 60 percent of training occurs on the job” (p. 403). Major employers like General Electric, ExxonMobil, JC Penney, Armstrong Floors, and Verizon utilize this training for their employees because the most efficient and effective way to learn for certain jobs is to actively perform the job. This belief applies across the employment spectrum from entry-level customer service representatives to engineers. This method works for these organizations.…

The catalyst to the geothermal development of the Philippines was the oil crisis that hit the country in the early 1970’s, exposing the country’s vulnerability to imported fossil fuel. Geothermal development efforts were initially started by the National Power Corporation which ushered in the development of the Tiwi and Makban geothermal fields in the Luzon Island through the Philippine Geothermal Incorporated (now Chevron) which resulted in the establishment of aggregate 660 MW plants (1979-1984). Recognizing the massive task ahead, the PNOC-EDC was created which immediately embarked in the exploration and development of the other geothermal areas in the country. This resulted in the commissioning of the 112.5 MW Palinpinon I geothermal plant (1983), the 112.5 MW Tongonan geothermal plant (1983), the 150 MW Bacon Manito geothermal plants (1994), and the Palinpinon II geothermal power plants (1992), all with the National Power Corporation as the power plant operator. With the advent of the BOT Law in 1992, the 588.4 MW Unified Leyte Plants (1996-1997) and the 106.0 MW Mindanao geothermal power plants (1997-1999) were installed. In February 2007, EDC commissioned its first merchant plant, the 49.4 MW Northern Negros geothermal power plant (2007). Chevron also optimized their geothermal resource (added Catigtig 2 30th Anniversary Workshop 95.7 MW) increasing the country’s geothermal power capacity to 1954.1 MW, making the Philippines the second largest geothermal power producer in the world. Looking forward, EDC as a private corporation is putting on stream growth projects with a capacity of up to 300 MW which is expected to be on line starting 2010.…
