Investigation into Errors Committed by the Secondary Students (grade VIII) in Writing English as a Foreign Language

Error in Writing English

Abstract In a foreign language situation “errors” explain the learner‟s inability to use appropriate grammatical structures, semantic categories and other linguistic units. This paper deals with “errors” in foreign language writing of the grade VIII students in order to explore why and what sort of errors they commit in writing. One hundred and twenty respondents from twelve nongovernment schools of Dhaka city were involved to render the errors with the association of writing composition test as well as focused group discussion. Congregated data is analyzed both in the quantitative and qualitative manner that reveals the respondents mostly undergo the errors of tense, spelling, article, subject-verb agreement, preposition and miscellaneous errors. The findings indicate the respondents‟ competence of writing English is quite low due to poor grammar knowledge of target language, interference from mother language and limited vocabulary size.

Introduction In Bangladesh, English is learnt as a foreign language institutionally. Foreign language is defined in the Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics (Richards, Platt, & Platt, 1992) as a language that is not a native language in a country. A foreign language is usually studied either for communication with foreigners who speak the language, or for reading printed materials in the language. Learning a different language is sometimes difficult since the target language has different elements compared to the native language. These differences sometimes cause students to make errors while using it. Among writing, reading, speaking and listening in English, writing is the most complex aspect but it is a crucial skill for

    I proceeded to analyze the sample writing, “prompt” activity 5.2, further exposing my ability to recognize grammar errors and corrective actions. A previously assigned reading mentioned native speaker know what sound correct automatically. Therefore, after silently reading through the 5.2 activity, reading it out loud allowed me to hear more inaccuracies. The quandary I am challenged with is what and how much to correct or ignore taking into consideration the following factors. First, will the corrections still preserve the voice of the original writer? Next, what effects will “marking” all needed corrections have on the learner’s motivation? Lastly, do the mistakes interfere with the intended audiences’ comprehension (Vann, Meyer, & Lorenza, 1984)?     Chapter 1: The Problem and its Setting Introduction Generation 1.5 students, students from non-English speaking cultures who have been long-term immigrants or life-long residents of the United States, often have difficulty in academic writing even though they may be culturally assimilated and orally fluent in English. Their strong oral background but weak literacy skills present a series of unique challenges to the students themselves, English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors, and first language (L1) composition instructors. First, Generation 1.5 students‘ oral proficiency may blind the students, as well as the people who want to help them, to the disconnect between their oral proficiency and their writing abilities.     Abstract: Linguistic features of English and Indonesian essays made by EFL (English as Foreign Language) undergraduate students were analyzed by using content analysis. The objective was to identify the similarities and differences in sentence complexity, grammar, and mechanics of the essays. Errors in the forms of incomplete sentences, run-on and stringy sentences were found as well as grammatical and mechanical errors. The results showed that in the area of grammar, the essays indicated that the students had more proficiency on their first language (L1), but relatively poor on their second language (L2).     As English has been likely the most popular medium of instruction for many courses at higher education institutions, learning English will enable students to meet essential requirements in their academic subjects and perform well in the professional contexts (Adams & Keene, 2000). In these circumstances, the students are often demanded to submit some specific writing assignments like article reviews, proposals, projects or research reports. However, they are likely to face a number of writing problems in vocabulary, organization of ideas, grammar and referencing. The main causes of these issues may arise from internal English fundamentals (poor vocabulary, lack of knowledge and motivation), environmental reasons (the frequent use of native language, limited opportunities to practice English) and English teaching techniques (lack of writing practices; unskilled and inexperienced English teachers). In response to these writing problems, as pointed out by Russell (1991) and Ober (1992), it is recommended that several teaching practices, such as using fun mini-games to inspire students in learning English, reading academic-specific materials extensively and assigning additional volumes of writing tasks in discipline-specific courses, should be applied to strengthen students’ writing skills.
