Narrative Essay: Trip To Haiti
Aldo Campbell
Narrative Essay
January 24, 2012
Trip to Haiti As long as I can remember, I had always wanted to fly on an airplane. As I got older I dreamed of traveling to another country. I had a desire to see new places and learn new things. I wanted to experience a new culture, the food, the language, and another way of life. The church I had been attending had a pastor who would coordinate mission trips to Haiti every year. I approached the pastor and inquired how I could get involved and possibly join the team. Before I knew it, I was assisting with fundraising, packing supplies, and coordinating donations for children’s activities. Now it was time to load the vans with all the luggage and team members, and head to the airport

During my high school years approximately around my sophomore/ junior year my basketball team including I myself attended the Hoops for Haiti fundraiser that Meredith Elementary school hosted. Hoops for Haiti helps aid the disaster relief fund that is held in Haiti. Hundreds of elementary school children paid $5 each for a chance to play with not only Neumann-Goretti’s women’s basketball team but also the men’s team too. All proceeds were meant to go directly to rebuild and fund schools in Haiti. I decided to talk about this specific service that I participated in because not only was it fun but I got to interact with kids younger than me and was able to put smiles on their faces, those who were there and hopefully those in Haiti knowing that they do have people who care and want to help them out in every way possible.…

I never realized how lucky I was to be granted such a stupendous life until I saw the poverty some people live in. Over the summer, I was fortunate enough to be able to take an ephemeral trip to Nassau, Bahamas. It was much different than I imagined it would be. I remember walking around and almost being frighten to leave my parents sides. There were natives on every street corner trying to con their way into you spending money on their fake product; there were people going through the trash looking for food; there were people sitting on the street with all their belongings tied up to their bicycle street. You could just tell this country was nowhere near as advanced as the United States. It was nothing like the pictures and it got me thinking of the gloomy lives these children will have to grow up in and all the opportunities that they don't have available here.…

I came to the United States from Colombia when I was just 3 years old. I was brought into the country of bright opportunities because like every other parent, my mother and father wanted what was best for me. My mother had to give up her dream job in Colombia, which was being an accountant for an essentially important company, in order to facilitate my well-being and open up the doors for my future. As the years progressed, I began to acquire both languages, English and Spanish, but there was a point where I became tongue tied and had to assist in speech therapy. My parents would talk to me in Spanish at home but in school all I would hear was English, my mind was extremely confused to the point that I made my own language by using both tongues in one sentence.…

I have come to understand that I have an innate urge to help those more disadvantaged than I. I believe that God has placed this urge in my so that I can be an instrument of his will. We all have the potential and are called to me such an instrument and that calling comes in different avenues for each person. I believe that I have found one such avenue. I learned God understands and know the potential in each person and will task him or her with only the things they have the power to handle. I pray that as the years go forth and I enter into my professional career this experience and other experience will grant me the knowledge on how to create a nonprofit organization that will help the children of Haiti gain a proper education. Born to my father and mother who are natives of Haiti, I have developed a strong sense of the Haitian culture. I was born and raised in the United States, but I would have to tell you that because there is no way to decipher that due to the manner in which my parents raised me and my 3 siblings. My parents are proud Haitians that believe in their principles, religious beliefs, and the upbringing of their children. My parents kept us in church 24 hours and 7 days a week. If there was a service happening, we were going to be there. After a while, growing up in that type of household you would either love church or hate it. The Haitian community had church services anywhere that was available store front, basements, gymnasiums, and even…

Overwhelmed. The only word I can think of when the flight attendant calmly says, “Welcome to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, you may now unfastened your seatbelts.” Tears fell from my eyes and all the emotions that I was feeling for the last 4 hours suddenly began pouring out. I had never been to Haiti and the only mindset of it I had was that there was killing and kidnapping. I was extremely anxious because of that. “NO!, YES!, NO!, YES!, NO!!”, my conflicted mind begins to yell. I couldn't believe that I was actually there. Holding up the line, I got off the plane as slowly as possible. Ironically, being up in the air was much more relieving than being on the grounds IN HAITI !. “Daph, you’ll be alright,” my mom says. “Hopefully,” I mumbled. I thought to myself that maybe just maybe I will actually enjoy it.You will never actually understand the importance of bigger things without appreciating the little things…

Many people take vacations to tropical islands to witness first-hand the beauty of the island. But, Kincaid expresses that tourism shelters the harsh reality of what daily life is for its inhabitants. In A Small Place, Kincaid explains, “[A]nd so you needn’t let that slightly funny feeling you have from time to time about exploitation, oppression, domination develop into full-fledged unease, discomfort; you could ruin your holiday.” Here, she attempts to pull at the reader’s conscience. She believes that when tourists travel to what they believe to be beautiful, tropical islands that the tourist tries not to think about things such as poverty or dictatorship in order to not feel guilty and fully enjoy their vacation. However, tourism is a source of revenue and can help improve the economic status of a country. Once a country’s economic level improves, that country can begin to broaden its sources of economic revenue, so that it will not become dependent on…
