Narrative Complexity In How To Get Away With Murder
- How to Get Away with Murder is a narrative complex show, falling on “a continuum [rather] than [in] an either/or situation" between episodic and serial programs (Kozloff, 71). Similar to the show Alias, which "offered a strong example of narrative complexity, juggling both ongoing and episodic stories of espionage with arcs of relationship dramas mapped onto both family and spy politics," How to Get Away with Murder will contain ongoing and episodic elements (Mittell, 61). Many episodes will involve individualized cases handled by Annalise and her team, while other storylines carry from episode to episode. The bulk of the serialization will center on the murders of Sam Keating and Lila Stangard. Like other narratively complex programs, "a …show more content…
The first half of season 1 will take place on the night of Sam’s murder and flashback – beginning three months prior on the first day of school and include an investigation in Lila’s murder – to a different case in each episode. Midway through, an episode will take place where the two timelines meet; however, prior to this the series will "invite temporary disorientation and confusion, allowing viewers to build up their comprehension skills through long-term viewing and active engagement" (Mittell, 62). During the pivotal episode the audience will finally be clued into how the events chronologically progressed the night of Sam’s murder – however, some interactions will be withheld and will be revealed in the second half of the …show more content…
There are many, they are messy, and they are complicated. Just like friendships, no one actually trusts the person they are in a relationship with – at least not fully. Take the love triangle between Annalise, Sam, and Nate, everyone is involved with more than one person. Annalise is sleeping with both men, but it is unclear if she really loves either of them. Nate has a sick wife at home (who works mainly to demonstrate the lack of faithfulness in this triangle, we do not actually meet her in the first season). And then there is the relationship between Sam and Lila, both of whom are dead in the first

Another article I would like to discuss is from People magazine written by Jeff Truesdell, Neighbors of Making a Murderer's Steven Avery Speak Out About His Guilt or Innocence: 'Those of Us Who Live Here Know He's Guilty.’ In this article, Jeff Truesdell interviewed locals of Manitowoc County; Steven Avery’s neighbors. The neighbors paint an incredibly different picture than what is provided in Making a Murderer. The neighbors discuss how much safer they felt now that Steven Avery was back in jail, and how when he was released the first time they believed something strange happened. The general consensus of his neighbors was that he was guilty for the assault he was in jail for originally, and for the crimes he is in jail for now. One neighbor…

It is a safe conjecture to say that everyone has been witness to some sort of violence throughout their lives. Some may have witnessed it in person, and others have only witnessed it through media such as movies or television. Most of the time nobody has any problem with it at all. Until they are somehow affected by it, that is. As soon as that happens, they try to find someone to place the blame on. In the case of a movie, for example, if someone sees a movie that has an excessive amount of violence will that make them want to go out and act the same way as the characters in the movie? According to John Grisham the answer to this question is yes and in his essay entitled "Unnatural Killers," he tries to prove this point but is not effective.…

Since the beginning of time, people have been creating art not just for aesthetic purposes, but as a way to express opinion, communicate with others, and explain the unknown or misunderstood. Often times, artists have contrasting views on the same topic and show this through their illustrations. Portrait of a Psychopath by Krista Gibbard and Confessions of a Sociopath by Jonathan Rosen are both illustrations showing vastly different interpretations of what a sociopath is. And while both images employ the artistic use of color, space, and style to characterize the sociopath, each can be interpreted to have its own unique opinion and attitude.…

"So, what are you into?" A simple question, right? Wrong. You'd think in the 21st century people would be more open minded to other's interests, but when you have an interest in serial killers like I do it's hard to get a conversation past that simple question.…

As we walked into the jury room, after hearing the case of Commonwealth v. Miller, I had already decided how I would vote and, honestly, I determined I was not going to be swayed. We swiftly chose a foreman by appointing the one, who had been given the jury instructions, to that position. Next, we read the jury instructions out loud, in order to remember and understand the definition of each charge. Debate over the meaning of the instructions ensued for a short amount of time before we dove into determining guilt or innocence. Everyone was given a chance to discuss the case and, personally, I felt comfortable entering the discussion and debating the case. After discussion, we voted and were evenly split among guilty or not guilty. Next, we…

Murder and killing is in all likelihood a topic many people may not like discussing; as it is a concern that can make almost anyone uncomfortable and uneasy. On the other hand, I’ve always had an itch for forensics and learning more about the minds of serial killers that have done damage to innocent people. The podcast, The Bad Show, on radiolab made me curious to learn more and write about serial killers and murder and why essentially, we, as people think about evil thoughts and killing. Serial killing has had its place in the eyes of the public where private, hidden desires and public fantasies cross together to people who can be known as sociopaths.…

A relationship is how two or more people are connected to one another. In an ideal relationship the people in it benefit from it but sometimes it's the exact opposite. Lennie, George, Curley, and his wife from Of Mice and Men by john Steinbeck along phineas and gene from A Separate Peace by John Knowles, give examples of a relationship and how the people in it affect one another. The book Of Mice and Men is about two men one of which deeply depends on the other. The book a separate peace is about two boys who are very different but still remain to be best friends. All these characters show how relationships can hinder a person from achieving their goals.…
