Narrative Analysis Of Montresor
How often have you sat in a pub waiting for the arrival of a friend? Waiting here for minutes, deep in thought, Fortunato wondered if it was a good idea meeting here to discuss business. Ordering a couple of drinks, one for Fortunato and presumptuously one for Montresor when suddenly Fortunato feels a tap on his shoulder, consequently, Fortunato spins around and realize its Montresor. “Well hello, I wondered if you were going to show”, says Fortunato.

Puzzled, Montresor exclaims, “How else would I be able to tell you what a fabulous winemaker I have become!” “Fortunato, winemaking is an art that you will see I have perfected!” Fortunato rolls his eyes, looks at Montresor and smirks as he orders another drink. Montresor

“I am not so sure I can trust you at this point, my friend. How can I be certain you are taking me where you claim to?” inquires Fortunato.

“We haven’t exactly been on the best of terms, although, my offer to critique your skills and financial abilities has been with the best of intentions. We have been driving for quite some time now and you have hardly said a word which is making me more than nervous I must admit. How much longer before we reach that marvelous destination of yours?” Fortunato asks with a nervous laughter.

With a sheepish grin and a smirk on his face, Montresor turns and calmly replies,” It is not much further now so no need to be nervous. Heading just a bit further down the road towards the vineyards on the left you will see and smell the luxurious grapes that surround my estate.”

With the windows down in the car and the smell of grapes in the air, the estate was sure to be close by.

“Ah, there it is. My home sweet home, where the sweetest grapes are grown and the tastiest wine in the territory is produced!” shouts

I’m certainly looking forward to viewing the winery and will admit I’m a bit nervous as well as excited to see your winemaking skills in action,” replies Fortunato.

Motioning for them to go downstairs to the winery Montresor extends his hand to show the way without saying a word. Fortunato cautiously walks down the stairs with Montresor close behind. Once reaching the bottom Fortunato suddenly stops.

“This is the great winery in which one can taste your tantalizing cougar juice?” asked Fortunato. “It is completely mind-boggling as it is not at all what I expected!” You have admitted to spending an abundance of mazuma on something not worth a plug nickel!” laughed Fortunato.

“This place is a grotesque, stick nasty mess. What a joke! There is no obvious reason for me to critique your books as I can see from the disarray around here why you are in a financial mess, as you haven’t a clue as to the first thing about making sweet and fragrant, let alone lip-smacking wine!”

Montresor hands Fortunato a glass of wine. Accepting the wine Fortunato takes a sip and sighs. “Not as terrible as you mentally conceived is it?” asks Montresor. “This place may not look as you had expected, however it does produce some sweet and savory

Even the narrator, Montresor, is given an air of madness when described as “putting on a mask of black silk and drawing a roquelaire closely.” (Poe page 2) This gives us the sense of how mysterious he is, and takes the story even further into the suspense. We also begin to see that Fortunado is an extremely foolish character. Fortunado is said to be an expert on wines and is shown taking full advantage of this during the carnival by being completely drunk. He is dressed in motley, a suit a clown would wear, which puts him in an unsuspecting, innocent light. When Montresor invites him to go along with him to see the amontillado wine in the catacombs, Fortunado jumps at the chance to see it, which also builds appeal for the reader to read on.…

Looking closely at how Fortunato acts when Montresor is burning him slowly, shows that Fortunato does anything for attention. Since Montresor is his friend, he does not suspect anything strange at first. "He laughed and threw the bottle upwards with a gesticulation. I did not understand" (p. 3 li. 17-19). Fortunato has the tendency to need attention even though he did not understand Montresor when he mentioned harm to himself. It is clear from this situation that Fortunato is always wanted to be…

In addition to vengefulness, Montresor was also a clever person. By the third paragraph it is evident that Montresor formulated a plan to carry out against Fortunato. Montresor stated “I continued, as was my intent to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation” (Poe, 1). The narrator then went into detail about Fortunato’s weak points. “He had weak points, this Fortunato” (Poe, 1). Montresor knew that Fortunato was an expert on wine. “He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine” (Poe, 1). Montresor also knew that Fortunato was not skilled in painting or gems. He proved that when he said “In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymen, was a quack, but in the matter of old wines he was sincere” (Poe, 1). This displayed Montresor’s high mental alertness.…
