41. Nanotechnology is poised for widespread use in the defence sector, wherein they can offer significant benefits over a variety of applications ranging from making more durable concrete to miniature surveillance devices. Nanomaterials and Nanocomposites are being considered for uses in related industries and at the nanoscale, these materials can behave differently from their conventional scale counterparts, which creates exciting new prospects in a variety of applications particularly on the LC fence.

Cement paste and mortar with Nano Silica addition needs more water in order to keep the workability of the mixtures constant. Test results have shown that Nano Silica can improve the microstructure and reduce the water permeability of hardened concrete. Microstructural analysis of concrete by different electronic microscope techniques revealed that the microstructure of the Nano Silica concrete is more uniform and compact than for normal concrete. The Nano Silica particles fill the voids of the CSH-gel structure and act as nucleus to tightly bond with CSH-gel particles therefore increases durability. The addition of Nano Silica increases density, reduces porosity, and improves the bond between cement matrix and aggregates which produces concrete that shows higher compressive and flexural …show more content…
Current research on the application of multifunctional materials such as nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes, shows that, not only do these materials significantly enhance the effectiveness of materials used on the LC fence but they are also useful for monitoring, surveillance and damage control due to their special properties. The accurate assessment of the overall picture on the LC fence using nanotechnology can result in significant savings in both human life, cost, efficiency and schedule .
Contemporary Materials
56. Iron Pickets . The iron pickets currently being used do not have adequate strength to withstand the vagaries of climate and snow fall. The new design which consists of hollow cylindrical poles is being tested. The use of nanotechnology can significantly enhance the properties of steel and reduce corrosion and increase it’s strength.
57. Concertina Coils and Barbed Wire . Nanomaterials like Carbon Nano Tubes can be enmeshed into Punched Tape Concertina Coils or Barbed Wire. The nano sensors can detect any intrusion and activate the alarm system. Damage to any particular part of the fence can also be pin pointed.
58. Concrete. Damage to concrete can be easily monitored using Motes. The curing process can be hastened and the strength of concrete can be increased by adding Nano Silica and Titanium Di
