Observation 1: SQ
Observation One: The Status Quo
First, Nano Development in Mexico is on the rise – it’s unregulated and risks spinning out of control

(Tierramérica, “MEXICO: Scientists Call For Regulation of Nanotechnology,” 03/12/2012, http://www.tierramerica.info/nota.php?lang=eng&idnews=3920&olt=568, AC)
MEXICO CITY, Mar 12 (Tierramérica).- Nanotechnology, which is currently unregulated in Mexico, could pose serious threats to human health and the environment, cautions a new study. "Far from a policy of precaution vis-à-vis these new technologies, products are entering the market without regulation to guarantee their safety or labels to inform of their use," researcher Guillermo Foladori of the public Autonomous University of Zacatecas told Tierramérica. Foladori and his colleague Noela Invernizzi are the co-authors of a new report, "Implicaciones sociales y ambientales del desarrollo de las nanotecnologías en América Latina y el Caribe" (Social and Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology Development in Latin America and the Caribbean), presented on Mar. 7 in Mexico City. Nanotechnology involves the manipulation of matter on an atomic and molecular scale to change its physical and chemical properties, and is used in electronic components, cosmetics and packaging, among other products.
And, haphazard development risks spilling over – Latin America is a potential hotbed for Nanotech, but lack of controls or vision risks disaster

Currently, “nanotechnology development and production is geographically widespread, with more than sixty countries pursuing national nanotechnology research and innovation programs (Shapira and Wang, 2010), with the use and application of nanotechnology occurring globally. Regulation and oversight is primarily national, with some growth in nanotechnology information exchange, harmonization, and standards setting at supranational and international levels (Murashov and Howard, 2011), including activity by the OECD through its Working Parties on Nanotechnology (OECD 2011a) and on Manufactured Nanomaterials (OECD, 2012b). Arguably, some best practices are emerging (IRGC, 2007), but there remain significant differences by countries in the governance and regulation of nanotechnology. There are variations in the overall approaches to, and investment in, the assessment of environmental, health, safety, ethical, legal, and societal implications of…

With history, one must begin with the past. Of course, like most things, nanotechnology was just an idea or concept; a concept that was proposed by the physicist Richard Feynman in 1959. He stated that he wanted to build tiny factories all manufacturing simultaneously. He continued to say that it does not violate any laws of physics and has not been in practice only because humans are too big. The practice of it began to develop when the scanning tunneling microscope was created. This enormous microscope allowed humans to view the height of individual atoms. What was seen looked like some alien landscapes. However, using the same machine, they could also move, pick up, and place the atoms, rearranging these landscapes into their own. Nanotechnology is starting to skyrocket these days. It is one of the major studies right now. Many products are already using nanotechnology. These products are batteries that have longer life spans, sunscreen that doesn’t whiten the user’s face and bandages that kill bacteria. But what will there be in the future? There are chances that the uses of nanotechnology in The Risen Empire can become real. There may be nanosuits and nanoships, but most likely not until the distant future. Other possible products in the distant future may be disease killing nanotechnologies that roam the body, destroying threatening bacteria or viruses.…

Nanotechnology can be defined as the science and engineering involved in the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of materials and devices whose smallest functional organization in at least one dimension is on the nanometer scale or one billionth of a meter. At these scales, consideration of individual molecules and interacting groups of molecules in relation to the bulk macroscopic properties of the material or device becomes important, since it is control over the fundamental molecular structure that allows control over the macroscopic chemical and physical properties. Applications to medicine and physiology imply materials and devices designed to interact with the body at subcellular (i.e., molecular) scales with a high degree of specificity. This can potentially translate into targeted cellular and tissue specific clinical applications designed to achieve maximal therapeutic affects…

As we are moving rapidly towards the twenty first century, the development within the world of science and technology is moving even faster. Just think of the everyday situation, where you go to a store to buy yourself a computer, and as you leave the store, noticing the door closing behind you, it occurs to you that the value of your loving computer already has decreased. This is caused by the tremendous research in the microelectronics, which has changed a lot of things in the last twenty years or so. It has opened up a great range of new possibilities, as the size of the electrical devices has diminished. About every second year, the amount of transistors placed on a micro chip doubles, but it is limited and soon a new technique has to be developed to carry on building faster computers. The silicon is the very heart of the microelectronics and will probably still be of great importance as we pass the change of millennium. However, experiments indicate a growing field for a new technique based on molecules. This is due to the scientists, who try to bring us from the micro scale to the nano scale, though it is another matter in the periodic table that is used, Carbon. This leads us to the main issue of this project. Carbon nanotubes describes a specific topic within solid state physics, but is also of interest in other sciences like chemistry or biology, actually the topic has coating boundaries, because we are on the molecule level. The carbon nanotubes have in the recent years become more and more popular to the scientists. Initially, it was the spectacularly electronic properties, that were the basis for the great interest, but eventually other remarkable properties were discovered too.…

In the last two decades, new terms with the prefix `nano' have rushed into the scientific vocabulary; nanoparticle, nanostructure, nanotechnology, nanomaterial, nanocluster, nanochemistry, nanocolloids, nanoreactor and so on. Nanoparticles, are defined as particulate dispersions with a size in the range of 10-100nm (Gubin et al, 2005). Magnetic nanoparticles have gained a remarkable interest in the last years both for basic research and applied studies. The use of magnetic nanostructures has been proven in biochemistry, biomedicine, and waste treatment among other fields. This broad range of applications is based on the fact that magnetic particles have very large magnetic moments, which allow them to be transported and driven by external magnetic fields. The magnetic nanostructures have also a great potential in biotechnological processes taking into account that they can be utilized as a carrier for enzymes during different biocatalytic transformations (Dussán et al, 2007). Different types of biomolecules such as proteins, enzymes, antibodies, and anticancer agents can be immobilized on these nanoparticles. Magnetic supports for immobilization purpose are either prepared by incorporating magnetic particles during the synthesis of the supporting polymer or magnetic particles…

Karen Burrows was a child prodigy, who had completed her PhD degree in physics from MIT and started a work to develop a nanotechnology circuit at the prestige Google institute. At the age of 20, she had been awarded numerous awards for her intellectual achievements, including a noble prize in physics. Soon after that she had established a company with a name of “Nano-KB-Technology, Inc.” Which was working for the development of Nano-Circuits that could be capable of performing a huge number of calculations and other computer enabled tasks with a size of less than a single square inch. Initially the project was looking attractive, but it will require a very large period of time to bring it to the market. Originally the company was founded out of the funds of Karen’s trust, but with the passage of time it was difficult for her to fund the ongoing projects individually, therefore she had tapped local venture capital sources to finance the second and third phases of the project and decided to take the company public to raise further cash to buy them out and to further fund the operations.…
