Najmah Quotes
(AGG) The book Under The Persimmon Tree by Suzanne Fisher Staples is a great book to show how one can be affected by loss, and how loss shapes someone for better or for worse. (BS-1) When Baba-Jan and Nur were kidnapped by the Taliban, Najmah became much more responsible, mature, and helpful around the house. (BS-2) When Najmah became a boy in the form of Shaheed, she learned to adapt to her surroundings and use what she had. (BS-3) After Najmah finally reunited with Nur, she became very determined yet mentally sound. (TS) Najmah was shaped by loss in 3 different ways due to 3 different losses, in the fact that she became more responsible and grown up, learned to adapt, and was very determined yet mentally sound after everything she had been …show more content…
(SIP-A) Before the Taliban kidnapped Baba-Jan and Nur, Najmah wasn’t very helpful, and was very childish with her fear of imaginary leopards. (STEWE-1) Her mother had to help her overcome her fear, but it didn’t fix anything, as Mada-Jan says, “Stop trying to scare her! Najmah, you know there are no leopards around here. Now hurry, you two! Still I hesitate”(5). This clearly shows how gullible and childish Najmah is with her imaginary fear of leopards. In fact it is so bad, her mother has to comfort her and constantly tell her that they are not real. (STEWE-2) As Mada-Jan tells Najmah “You are a good and brave girl, she says, stroking my face. I don’t feel brave, but I don’t trust my voice to speak”(9). This shows that not only her mother has to comfort her, but it also doesn’t help her feel any better about the leopards. But once Nur and Baba-Jan were kidnapped, that all changed. (SIP-B) Najmah was doing lots of work around the house, and lost her fear of leopards. (STEWE-1) As Najmah says herself “I have forgotten my childish quarrels with Nur - I am no longer angry with him for scaring me about the leopard, and for saying I …show more content…
(SIP-A) Najmah was forced to become a boy, because if she didn't, she surely would've been whipped and beaten. (STEWE-1) This is shown when Najmah says “Just seconds after Khalida speaks, a black-turbaned talib comes along with a bamboo stave and whacks at the legs of the poor women begging along the road”(88). This shows how horribly women are treated, and the reason for her becoming a boy. (STEWE-2) She is given her boy form when Khalida tells her “I shall call you Shaheed. I nod my head slightly. It is not safe for a woman or girl in a strange city, she whispers, shifting her chin toward where the Pashtun talib had beaten the woman begging by the side of the street”(90). This shows the reason for her becoming a boy and Khalida’s desire to keep Najmah safe. (SIP-B) After a while, Najmah learns to use her appearance as a boy to her advantage. She knows that in order to find Baba-Jan and Nur, she must do it as Shaheed. (STEWE-1) Najmah expresses this by saying “Reuniting with them is my one and only reason for existence, and if I must do it as Shaheed, then I will be Shaheed for as long as necessary”(150). This shows that no matter how uncomfortable it is for her to be Shaheed, she knows it will help her get what she wants. (STEWE-2) Najmah knows that boys have more privileges than girls, and she expresses this by saying “I take advantage of being dressed as

“There are so many ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it involves giving up everything you have ever known for the sake of something greater.” This quote by Veronica Roth is true, however, the greatest act of bravery is giving up everything for someone lesser than yourself, like in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The story revolves around an Afghan named Amir and the son of his father 's servant, Hasssan. Amir betrays Hassan and spends the rest of his life trying to redeem himself. In Muslim culture, boys are girls are treated unequally. This is surprisingly because in the book of Islamic religion called the Holy Qu’ran, it refers to the male and female as equals. The Qu’ran states specifically that, “Islam is very clear on issues of equality between men and women,” and that “Allah has created men and women from the same source, and that they are equal partners who complement each other so that happy life is unimaginable for one of them without the other.” (Sabbah, Hilda. “Gender Issues in Islamic…

In qualitative research it is important to review empirical literature on the subject of study in an effort to provide a logical framework for the efforts undertaken by the researcher in a given context. Johnson does draw on some relevant literature to contextualize her research, but the literature is overly summarized instead of analyzed. Johnson reviewed three main studies pertaining to constructivist conceptualization of bereavement, adolescent development theory, and knowledge from literature about traumatic loss and resilience. The constructivist conceptualization of bereavement literature created a strong framework regarding the author’s research questions as well as developmental theory. However, the literature attained from traumatic…

Every day we are given a fresh start; another chance to move forward in our lives and accomplish the things we thrive to achieve day to day. A new day can also liberate us from our past mistakes and provide us with a chance to change our ways. We are all faced with misery and misfortune at points in our lives, some more than others. We must recognize that it is not the burden in itself that shapes who we are, but how well or how poorly we deal with the difficulties. Sometimes misfortunes can be seen in a negative light; because it seems unjust, therefore we response in a negative matter, and become negligent to change. Overcoming tragic events is what truly counts, for we are meant to live happily and in acceptance that there are things that we cannot change. In many cases, individuals seem to feel as though they’ve lost an amount so great that they are unable to free themselves of the pain. This perspective often leads to further suffering. A Temporary Matter by Jhumpa Lahou and Kiss Me by Andrew Pyper demonstrate a loss of identity, negligence towards communication, and eventually leading to the destruction of a relationship.…

Being a boy or a girl seems a very certain thing referring to the “sex” of the child which is determined by the child’s physical characteristics. Actually, children are able to decide to behave like a boy or a girl or something in between when growing up by their personal internal definition and interpretation of self which is their “gender identity”. This identity does not completely depend on their biological sex though most children’s gender identity aligns with their biological sex. Sometimes it is also influenced by expectations of gender from children’s parents, grandparents, teachers and some other previous generations and the society. Expectations from different people in different societies differ to each other and children of a society are often punished or rewarded for the degree to which the social roles they play accompany culturally constructed expectations of gender which is their “gender role”.…

The story The remains of the day, by Kazuo Ishiguro is filled with both aspects of loss and regret. The term Loss is an amount that one suffers due to an event and the term regret means to feel sorry for actions that have been done. These two major themes can be both seen literal and figurative over the course of the novel. The book stresses importance on the past and all that could of come from it. There are many regrets from Stevens not being able to be with Miss Kenton to never being able to be his own person. The loss in this book is heavy as well ranging from deaths to loss of happiness, and Lord Darlington’s loss of respect. The book has many flashbacks in it setting a scene of resentment in the characters fro the present. Overall both loss and regret play big roles in The remains of the day because of all the unhappiness these two ideals brought.…
