Naga City
Naga City's Peñafrancia Festival is considered as the grandest Marian Celebration in the country. Catholics and Bicolanos from different parts of the world unite in faith in manifesting their sincere devotion to the beloved "Ina" and patroness of Bicol - the Our Lady of Peñafrancia. Celebrated last September 15, 2012, the fluvial procession is the culminating event of the festival as thousands of devotees flock to Naga City, Camarines Sur to join the festivities as the image of Ina was transferred back to her shrine, the Basilica Minore de Peñafrancia.

It was a fiesta atmosphere when I arrived in Naga City via an Airphil Express flight. This year marks the festival’s 302nd anniversary. There were a lot of people and the roads were closed for the procession. Me and my friend proceeded to the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral where the image of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia stayed for a 9-day novena. A mass was being held inside the cathedral when we arrived, we joined the devotees waiting for the image of Ina to be brought out for the fluvial procession.

At around 3:00 PM, the doors of the church were closed in preparation for the Divino Rostro and Ina to be brought out. At 3:30 PM, the image of the Divino Rostro was brought out and was placed at the float and then out of the church's grounds.

A few minutes before 4:00 PM, the image of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia was brought out of the church and was placed on the metal carriage float. People started shouting "Viva La Virgen, Viva!" and waved their handkerchiefs. The feeling was truly ecstatic! You could really feel the genuine devotion of the Bicolanos towards Ina. I am at awe as I witness the unparalleled display of the devotees' faith, fervor and profound devotion.

With the help of barefooted voyadores or guardians of Ina, the float was ushered out of the church's grounds.

The procession started at the cathedral passing through the thousands of devotees overflowing the streets waiting

I attended the San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church located in the Old Town Plaza of Albuquerque, New Mexico on Monday October 15th. The church was originally found and served by the Franciscan Faris. When I entered the church I was amazed at how small the church actually was. From the outside the church looks bigger. The first thing that I noticed when walking in is the altar at the front of the church. The altar has statues of three iconic saints; the one in the center is San Felipe de Neri. I’m not too sure who the other two saints are. A kneeling angel on each side flanks the saints. When you look up from the altar, you see some anionic imagery of a cross with the symbol of the sacred heart.…

The reformed-minded Catholics in Nicaragua hoped that the Pope was going to say some words of consolation to the families which daily lose loved ones to the counterrevolution, especially since just days before 17 outstanding members of the Sandinista Youth Organization, killed in an ambush, and had been buried after a memorial program in this very same plaza. Certainly if the head of a foreign state visits a country the day after a busload of teen-angers killed in an accident have been buried, he is expected to make some sympathetic remarks.…

“Not necessity, not desire - no, the love of power is the demon of men. Let them have everything - health, food, a place to live, entertainment - they are and remain unhappy and low-spirited: for the demon waits and waits and will be satisfied.” This quote by Friedrich Nietzsche describes Nagaina from the story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” to the point. She was power hungry, which is what made her a demon. Nagaina planned to kill everyone in the bungalow, just for power, but is power really worth more than four, or more lives? There are many ways to describe the villain, or antagonist in the story, like Nagaina, who was a malicious, egotistical, and a desperate character in the story “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”.…

The priest, deacon, two people who gave the readings, and four alter servers gathered in the narthex. The choir sang an entrance hymn and they processed into the church and up to the alter. At the end of the service, they assembled at the foot of the alter and processed out of the church with the congregation following. It seemed to flow naturally with the servers leading and carrying the cross standard and candles. The two readers followed carrying the book with the readings. The two ministers were last in line. They greeted people sitting near the aisles, especially the children.…

Recently, I attended the Holy Family Catholic Church, located on, 5125 S Apopka Vineland Rd, Orlando, FL 32819. I must say I did feel nervous, because this would be my first time in a catholic church; also I have not been to a church in general in several years. The scenery and the parking lot full of cars added to my nervousness. My first impression of the church was astonishing. I was persuaded that most of my attention was focused on how well put and maintained the quality of the church was. As I entered the church through the wooden doors, the inside was nice looking with colorful stained windows, different candles, and the huge portrayal of Christ on the cross. The architects and paintings inside the catholic church was a strong indication…

In the movie “Radiant City”, I seen a lot of important critiques of suburbs. Two of the most important critiques that was presented was the relationship of isolation that is presented between people in the ‘community’ and the second most important critique that was presented was the separation of the community from other convenient places like grocery stores, shopping, work, parks, and convenience stores. In the movie Mark Kingwell a professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto stated, “Community is what defines us who we are and without community we are less than ourselves”, I agree with his statement because I believe people not only make up their community but what the community has in it makes up the people also.…

We, me and my family, celebrated the mass 1st thing in the morning as the sun rise, at Anabu Kostal near Puregold Imus. It started 7:00 in the morning, with a greetings, an entrance song then so on and so forth. First in the march are the Altar Boys or Sacristans, Commentator, Lecturer, Readers, Lay minister’s and the Priest. The priest was wearing a white robe with a purple sash. The colors of the clothing of the priest’s are very symbolic in the Catholic religion, and white stands for purity and peace. The other altar boys were carrying candles while walking in a Christmas song as an entrance hymn, signifying the advent season. Advent prepares for the birth of Jesus. When the priest began his opening prayers, he bowed his head in reverence to Jesus and chanted the opening prayer. Many Catholic masses operate in a chanting manner.…

The man moves on, feeling his way through the water. By the faint light from another manhole cover, he sees a dead baby floating in the water; it has gotten snagged on some debris. With his eyes closed he uses his foot to push the body free, but in his mind he sees it swept away by the current. The nightmarish quality of this episode, and his sense that the men and women in the church are as insignificant as this baby, makes him think again about his own guilt.…

The next part of the Service was more solemn as it was preparing for Holy Communion. This is where the Minister breaks the bread and gives the wine, representing the Body and Blood of Christ. I then went up to the sanctuary where I received a Blessing on my forehead from the Minister. Those that have been confirmed took the bread and wine. After the closing hymn, the Minister gave some notices and then dismissed us with the Blessing “Go in Peace to Love & Serve the Lord”. Our response, “In the name of Christ, Amen”.…
