INTRODUCTION.
SOLIDS, LIQUIDS AND GASES have properties that are use to describe how they behave, e.g. for solids it has a definite shape, you can hold a solid rock in your hand. You can push on a solid brick wall. Scientists say a solid is something that has shape. A solid resists any change in its shape.
TASKS 2.
LOOK AT THE PICTURES BELOW FOR SOLID, LIQUID AND GAS AND WRITE DOWN THREE PROPERTIES OF EACH?

Wood as a Solid.

Solid has a fixed shape
Its particles are tightly held together
It can be held in someone’s hand

Liquids have indefinite shape and so it can take the shape of any container, you turn on a faucet and water pours out. The water flows down into the sink until you put it in a glass. The water takes the shape of the glass. You pour milk from a carton into a bowl for your cat. The milk takes the shape of the bowl.

Water as a Liquid.

Its particles are loosely held together
It does not have a fixed shape
It flows

Gases also have indefinite shape and so it can be compressed into any container, you can’t hold a gas in your hand like a solid. You can’t pour a gas into a bowl like a liquid. Many gases are invisible. Scientists say a gas is something that expands to fill any container it is in. Helium as a Gas.
You can’t hold a gas in your hand
It particles run away from each other
You cannot see some gases

    * In the liquid phase, the particles can move past each other. The kinetic energy of the particles in a liquid is high enough to partially overcome the intermolecular attraction between the particles, but the attraction is still strong enough to hold the particles close together. This allows liquids to flow instead of being held together in a rigid structure.…

On heating a liquid, some of the particles will gain sufficient energy to allow them to break away and become a gas. A gas expands to fill its container that is, it does not have a definite size nor volume, neither does it have a definite shape. Gases always spread out to occupy all the space available to them. Gases are very easily expanded or compressed. Tgeir particles are randomly arranged with very large spaces and weak forces between them. Of the three(3) states of matter, the particles if a gas move the fastest and have the largest amount of energy.…
