Working with HCPT, I was involved in the successful pilgrimage of children with both mental and physical disabilities to Lourdes. It was crucial to adapt to each individual child to meet their complex needs for varying abilities. I found it challenging looking after a non-verbal boy with Global Developmental Delay who refused to leave his bed due to an illness. I interviewed Dr. Janet Geyer and received some great information from her. Geyer sand the hardest part of becoming a doctor was “The lack of personal time, everything became about school.” I knew that going into the medical field would be hard and the majority of my time would be spent studying, but hearing it from a doctor makes it real to me. I asked Geyer what makes her happy to be a doctor and why, she said “I like the intimate part of being a nurse, people tell me more than what they would normally tell others and sometimes I am really able to make a difference.” I thought about what she said and I would love to make a difference in someone’s life, but I also need to remember that I cannot get too attached to my patients. Geyer said that if she could go back and give herself advice from when she was in college she would tell…

One of the first places I started to assemble my foundation was my first job at Southfields academy as an unqualified teacher in Science. Teaching science at Southfields academy involved supporting, caring and working with disadvantaged groups of all ages with learning difficulties such as Dementia and Dyslexia. All these experiences has given me an insight into the characteristics a PA must possess, notably being kind, caring, friendly and most importantly approachable at all times, all of which I believe are key qualities of my personality.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

I have always been fascinated with how the human body functions. Growing up in a third world country, where curable diseases were highly prevalent due to lack of trained medical professionals. I always knew I wanted to seek a career in the medical field. This dream became realistic when I came to the United States of America to finish high school. Coming as an immigrant with a minimal knowledge of the English language and American Culture, I spent my high school years learning English and struggling to adapt to the rigorous school curriculum. After completing high school, my life took an unexpected turn; I found myself working full time to support the needs of my family. Nonetheless, years later, my dream to pursue degree in the field of healthcare has flourished. By entering this field, I hope to make a positive contribution both locally here in Pennsylvania and globally.…

When I was a young child, I witnessed my sister receiving stitches on her head. We were jumping on my bed when she fell and hit her head on the headboard. Serving and improving the lives of others is a fundamental duty that I believe should be a part of everyone’s personal mission.
