NAIT Personal Statement
I decided to pursue civil engineering because, I can easily solve problems and can think outside of box. Civil engineering requires the ability to use physics and problem solving in real life situations. These are things that come easily to me and I enjoy doing them. I have chosen to attend NAIT because it offers one of the best programs for engineering in Alberta and the classes are not as large as other colleges. I am going to accomplish my goal by first taking all of my required classes in high school. To even enroll into NAIT’s engineering program I must have taken and passed Math 30-1, Physics 30, and Grade 12 english and have passed with 75% overall grade.     The education necessary to excel in this field is rigorous and slightly lengthy, but will be brief when my ultimate goals, aspirations, and love for the math and science subjects are taken into consideration. My first path for extended education after graduating is attending Pierce Community College. Here I will attain my Associate of Science Degree, and I will focus my studies on their Track Two option. “The Associate of Science degree (AS-T) is designed for students who plan to transfer to science programs at four-year institutions after completing the first two years of study at Pierce. The degree enables students to fulfill the undergraduate general education requirements of most four-year science degree programs.”(http://www.pierce.ctc.edu/dist/degree/as#track2). I will apply myself to their Track Two option because it is meant “For Science Pre-Majors in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics and Atmospheric Sciences.”(http://www.pierce.ctc.edu/dist/degree/as#track2). This course requires 93 credits, which is equal to 6.2 quarters. With this in mind, it will take about 1.75 years to finish. Various classes will be taken including Calculus I, II, and III, Physics I, II,and III, Humanities, General Chemistry, and English Composition.     My first exposure to occupational therapy came while I was working as an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist with a young girl with apraxia. Her speech problems had been linked to a lack of core strength, and we were to begin implementing an exercise routine to increase her strength. To achieve this goal in an enjoyable yet effective way for the child, an occupational therapist was consulted and began teaching us methods that incorporated preferred play activities into her core strengthening program. Running this new program became the highlight of our sessions, for both me and her it seemed. The smiles and giggles had me enjoying my job on a greater level; it was not only entertaining for the child, but a delight for me to implement. It was then I became extremely intrigued about the OT profession, and decided to explore the options the field had to offer. Research and curiosity eventually landed me on various websites and talking to those in the field, gaining knowledge about the different types of therapies and types of needs targeted by occupational therapists. The part that struck me most after all my research: OT is about daily life. It is about the activities that occupy our time, the small obstacles most people tackle each day with ease, obliviously unaware of the magnitude of importance these tiniest of accomplishments can truly encompass. The little everyday challenges in life are often the ones most overlooked, but to those unable or learning to conquer these challenges, their importance is evident. To me, these daily obstacles seemed like the most essential to overcome, small successes that could greatly improve an individual’s quality of life.…

    When I was eleven years old I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I had a hard time coping with the changes in my mood. Part of my healing process consisted of trying many different medications, therapies, and developing the desire to heal. During this time, friends I had for many years pushed me away, and although I felt alone and confused at times, I came out thriving. Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder thought to be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain that can result in extreme swings in mood—from manic highs to depressive lows. To be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you must have experienced a high period (mania). Bipolar mania is described as an “extreme high,” or feeling unusually great. Most people with bipolar disorder when ill or when symptomatic experience more lows than highs. Unfortunately, the lows I experienced were so extreme that the friends I thought would be by my side through anything chose to follow other kids and use my disorder to bully me creating deeper depression. Initially, I felt stigmatized by my diagnosis. Most people I encountered either didn’t know what bipolar was or how to interact with someone suffering with the disorder. Teachers, peers, and family members had a hard time knowing what to say or how to act around me. I started to feel like I was no longer my own person but just one big disaster and my mood swings became even more extreme as a result. Eventually, I grew tired of feeling sorry for myself and began my quest for the right medication, vitamins, nutrition, psychological and spiritual health and wellbeing.
