Mythology In Society
Mythology has been around for thousands of years and today more myths are copied and created that follow ancient prototypes. Mythology has been enjoyed by billions of people over time,and myths still keep going today. Some people think that their is no more need for mythology in the world, but that is completely false. Humans don’t know everything, so there will always be need mythology. Mythology will always play a key role in society today. One of the big things that keep Mythology alive is that we do not know everything. We actually don’t know more things than we do know. Mythology is giving us ideas of what the truth is to some things. Many of the myths are probably not true, but the thing about it is that there has to be some that are …show more content…
Mythology is very entertaining to some people, so it will never die. If a story was not entertaining, then it probably did not last. Like when you think about the stories of Zeus, they were all very entertaining because he was an incredible god who could harness the power of lightning. To many people that is very intriguing for them. Another great example is the mighty Minotaur. The story of the Minotaur kind of sounds like a horror movie today. A half man- half bull combination is pretty scary, and it got people’s attention very easily. It is the same today with horror movies, many horror movies have some sort of monster that is meant to scare the audience, but it also makes the audience want more. The thing about these myths is that they are meant to be real, and we experience new mythology all the time. A big myth that is part of modern day society is bigfoot. Some people think that bigfoot is not real and they think people that think bigfoot is real are crazy. It was the same back then, when some people were viewed as crazy for believing it. I actually know many people who believe bigfoot is real because of what happened at my friend's lake house in Michigan outside of Dowagiac. Apparently some of the people who live there have seen bigfoot and all have stories about how they have seen it. Apparently a bunch of news stations showed up after a big sighting and the place went into a frenzy. This is how myths start. This

    Jessica Loucks Mythology 6/7/2012 Joseph Campbell has four functions that go along with myths, he explains the meaning and understanding of mythology and how they function with today’s society. This is the religious/spiritual function: a myth is meant to make people experience the powerful feeling of the divine in their lives. 2. The Cosmological Prospect. "The second function of a mythology," Campbell writes, "is to render a cosmology, an image of the universe." This might include how things like time, space, and biology work and are organized -- for example, how the world and its creatures came to be. 3. The Social Prospect. Campbell somewhat ominously defines this function of myth-telling as "the validation and maintenance of an established order." As I put it more positively above, it can also be seen as wisdom-rich models for social behavior. Parables embedded with morals attempt to teach us how we should behave -- what is model behavior and what is unacceptable. 4. The Psychological Sphere. This is the aspect of mythology where stories symbolize important points in an individual's life, with the purpose of "the centering and harmonization of the individual." Freud, with his Oedipal and Electra complexes, was one who explicitly connected myths with life paths.” The Greek myth has multiple views that you can view on different things. In the mystical/metaphysical outlook there was just more than one god. They didn’t think one god was good enough so they looked at all the types of creators.     Avatar Due to the recent rapid urbanization, and the rapid increase of consumerism that we face in our world today, this has led to a steep decline of epic myths been shared in the same way as they have been in the past years. Families and societies hardly have time to dedicate themselves to retain and pass on important myths that have been around for a long time. These myths were seen to teach us things on four levels; which is to feed us spiritually, to help explain the physical world to us, to help us understand on how we need to behave in society/teach us about the social roles that we need to inhibit and to teach us on how to act when under duress and be better prepared for life (4 functions of myth). It is true that in today’s modern society, we don’t pass on mythologies how we did in the past decades (a small fraction of us do like my grandmother who use to tell us epic Indian mythologies while me and my two brothers slept on the ground back In India), but as you are well aware, it is in our essence to keep moving and relaying information. It’s just that today most of it is done through movies and television shows which combine both the audial and visual components of a myth into one.
